Chapter First 1

Chapter First

Caleb

It has been a month living in Bellkay. A small town near the edge of Manhattan. Nobody knows much about it. It is peaceful here. No skyscrapers. No large vehicles. No factories, no industries. Just a simple town with simple people living in peace.

And the best part. It has got a beach. Beautiful beach. With blue water. Crystal clear. It is lovely here. Not like New York. Where I used to live before.

Well, I do miss one thing from my previous place.

Crimes. Mysteries.

There is not much here. I miss it. For I am the boy whose first love, first crush, first hobby, first addiction …. anything you say has been criminal mysteries. That is why I aspire to be a lawyer. A criminal lawyer.

But my mom won’t let me.

Well let us forget that once again.

But since there are no crimes here, I have no mystery to put my mind into. Nothing to keep me excited. Nothing to keep the adrenaline in my body

pumping continuously.

Well, I do have one mystery right now. But it is weird.

It is not connected to any crimes. But it still seems to matter to me a lot.

Prada Willows.

The girl who never smiles.

That is what I named her in my mind before the teacher took our attendance. I have been aimlessly staring at her. Her face is always simply expressionless. Her eyes staring into her notebook behind those rectangular grey glasses. Her hoodie always covering her head (and face) whenever outside the class. She never participates in any activity. She never talks. Nobody has ever heard her voice.

At first, beginning of the first semester of our high school, people ignored her, thinking she was a random loner. The one every school has. Then when the Mundungs (that is what the bad boys call themselves) got bored and tried to bully her, she just gave them a look.

A dangerous murderous stare. And everyone left her alone. Nobody tried to talk to her.

And now maybe I am the only human here who secretly wishes to know her.
