Chapter 1: The Hunt becomes the Hunted

Sienna wondered the great halls of the ruin estate that she’s called home ever since she was born. Now at the age of twenty she was the only one that was left to occupy the empty eerie halls of Cabot Estate. Waving her hand in the air caused the thick heavy curtains to swish open revealing a cloudy gray sky with distant rumbles. She looked at each of her family members portraits that hung tall on the mahogany walls; when she came to the last one of her parents. Running her finger tips over it like she always did she watched as they moved and talked the memory of that day coming to life just like the others did whenever she would touch them.

Wiping a stray tear from her cheek she made it the rest of the way to the grand staircase smiling to herself as she sat on the bannister sliding down the winding railing with a joyful laughter that echoed through out every hall and room. Hopping off the rail and stepping down the last two steps she walked into the kitchen rummaging through the fridge in search of left over breakfast from the day before. “You’re in high spirits today Sienna.” Alden said, materializing from the shadows with his huge leathery wings dragging on the stone floor as his thick long tail slithered along as he walked over to the glass door that over looked the family cemetery past the white rose bushes & white oak tree’s.

“Well it feels like a good day, did you hunt well?” She asked hopping up on the counter top biting into the apple she decided to eat. “I did, are you going out before the storm comes?” He asked, reaching out with his clawed hand for an apple as well. “Yes, I am going to the lake to gather more crystals my mother showed me.” She said, finishing up her apple and hopping down tossing the apple core into the trash bin. Humming his reply through his chewing he noticed her reflection in the glass was staring up at him. Turning half towards her with a raised thick brow in question; “So you can eat anything but you prefer to eat people?” She said it like a question but he knew that she meant it as a statement.

Chuckling at her curiousness of him still after all of these years of him raising her. “Yes, I can but it doesn’t bother you that I devour people now does it?” He asked, his red eyes watched her reaction carefully. “Nope, not in the slightest. Besides it’s none of my business who you choose to eat.” She said, shrugging her shoulders as she hugged him before slipping on her mid-calf boots and grabbed her bag as she skipped out the door with her brown locks swaying behind her as the heavy thick wooden door shut behind her. Appearing in front of the bay windows he watched as she walked down the gravel dirt path to the thirty foot iron black gate that was covered in vines. Slipping past the opening that was wide enough for only her, she walked through the dense forest as a cool breeze rolled in from the upcoming storm that swept through the hills and swirled the fallen leaves.

Seeing flash of lightning streaking across the sky. Just as she made it to the open grove an in the center laid the crystal blue lake. Smiling to herself as she walked closer to the large towering tree that was a few centimeters away from the edge. She sat her bag down and toed off her boots and pulled her shorts off, leaving her in her white halter top bodysuit. Walking into the cool water she took a shuttering breath adjusting to the temperature. Taking three deep breaths before she submerged herself under. Swimming to the bottom with the glowing crystals lighting her way towards them. Reaching the bottom of the lake she picked at least eight before she swam back up taking a much needed deep breath putting the crystals into her bag before she swam around on the surface as a few droplets started to fall from the over head gray clouds.

Closing her eyes she let herself float as if she was gliding through the clouds above. When the snapping of twigs and distant growls came out of nowhere. Popping her eyes open she looked around not seeing the source of the sound she heard. Ducking under the water so she wouldn’t make a sound she swam to the edge where the trees roots reached into the water.

•••

Pulling herself up she came nose to nose with a solid black wolf with the most deepest brown eyes she’s ever seen. “Oh my goddess.” She whispered she floated in place staying perfectly still and calm. The distant growling came once again as it caught the wolfs attention and she noticed how huge he was. She slowly pulled herself up out of the water reaching for her shorts and boots when the wolf turned back to her as she paused her hand over her shorts. Boots in hand already with her bag on her shoulder they stared at one another for what felt like years.

Till his eyes glazed over as if the werewolf was in deep thought or day dreaming. Taking that opportunity she tossed her shorts in the opposite direction of where she came and she took off running back in the direction of her family’s estate. The three wolves finally appeared sniffing the air and the shorts that were discarded. The black wolf had took off after her enjoying the chase she’s given him in weeks. She turned on a grassy path that Alden showed her when she was a child, taking this way would lead her to the side wall of the family cemetery that has a barrier around the whole property………just before she could reach the hole in the wall the black wolf leaped over her in front of her. She slid to a stop landing on her butt “Offt” the sound coming from her lips, when he bared his fangs as he snarled at her……….the wolf started to walk towards her as she began to crawl backwards when it growled at her from deep within it’s chest. Halting her movements she watched in fear as the huge beast came closer and closer till he was right in front of her.

Feeling its hot breath on the top of her head fanning some of the locks that fell forward in her brown eyes. He nuzzled her on her cheek and sniffed deeply from her neck. Noticing that she shivered from being to close to him, he could sense that she wasn’t feeling as afraid as she was before. He was pleased from that, after leaving his scent on her clothes and her; he circled around her watching her till he heard the other rumbling through the forest from the three wolves that had caught up to him finally. Gasping she saw the other three was as equally huge just as the black one. Actually she noticed that when the three of them stood next to the black one they were all in equal height and build.

The four of them circled around her brushing up against her that had her shivering from the contact. The ash gray/black wolf nuzzled her as well as the other two gray wolves, oddly she didn’t feel afraid of them. But she heard about werewolves from her father, how uncontrollable they can be and that they’re more animal than human. A cool breeze rolled in when they sniffed the air turning around in the direction behind her spotting someone in the distance…the ash gray/black wolf growled lowly in warning as the other three backed away separating themselves from her going in three different directions.

Disappearing in the brush of the bushes, when she tried crawling away; she felt the ground around her shake when gray paws came into view on either side of her arms. Taking a deep breath she turned around being met with a wet muzzle touching her nose. “Uh, um, er well I should be going um, er home.” She stammered, nervously mentally shaking her head at how her words wouldn’t come out……..a deep growl rumbled from the wolfs chest as they both stared deep into one another’s eyes. Suddenly three shots rang out in the distance from a smoking barrel of a gun; shots was heard that caused the wolf to duck and her to scream. Not thinking twice about it the wolf bit the collar of her bodysuit and dragged her out of the line of fire, fallowed by another shot that pierced its furry shoulder that caused the wolf to whimper and grit its teeth…..she could hear growls and snarling and screams and gun fire while she was covered by the weeping willow vines of the tree.

Looking up at the wolf that was breathing heavily when he collapsed suddenly. Not being able to hold his animal form any longer, she was speechless at the gorgeous man before her. Light gray like vein lines appeared under his skin effecting his breathing causing his eyes to shift from his wolfs dark brown eyes to his human one’s. “I got one! Com’on! It’s over here.” A male voice shouted as it came closer towards them. “Shit, shit, shitty freaking shit!” She mumbled, lifting him up under his underarm’s struggling to drag him towards the arch of her family’s gate. “Good god you’re heavy.” She panted, pulling him along while stumbling and almost dropping him.

“They went over here!” One of the voices shouted again. “Shoot this isn’t working” she thought. Looking around not seeing anyone around them yet. “You…need to…run.” He rasped out looking up at her as the pain grew worse with each breath he took. “Yea, well I am not leaving you to die by these crazy people.” She said, mumbling some words under her breath over and over again till he felt his body become lighter and start to hover over the ground. Looking up at her again he saw her eyes glowing a firie orange as she chanted and continued walking keeping focus. “She’s a mystic. I thought they were all hunted down and killed by witches.” The thought flowed through his mind to his three brothers.

“How do you know this? She smelt human when we sniffed her out.” Ace questioned as the three of them ran towards them seeing through their brother’s eyes and feeling his pain. A shot was fired that broke her concentration when he dropped back to the ground as her eyes faded back to brown. “Well, well, well a little she-wolf trying to help her alpha.” A tall lanky man with a jagged scare going from his left brow across the bridge of his nose to the bottom right jawline said, hunched over walking towards them. Laughter came from the shorter man next to him, that she recognized from three weeks ago at the market in town. With his sandy blonde hair and light dusting of freckles and soft blue eyes. “We can take the Alpha and mount him on the wall and her, hmm she’ll be great for entertainment.” The tall lanky man said, smiling showing off his chipped crooked teeth as he pulled out his knife from his side holster. She held onto his shoulders tightening her grip from fear and anger that they would kill him for sport like he’s a trophy, but what really made her stomach twist in a horrible sickening feeling was him thinking he would have his way with her, a low growl came from him as he tried to sit up a little to hide her behind his broad back.

When all of a sudden the shadows came alive behind the two men. Snatching the lanky man up off the ground pulling his arms from the shoulders. Screaming out in agony when his head twisted completely around as blood dripped from his open mouth. Before his head was torn from his body; “What the fuck? What the fucking hell was that!?” The boy shouted dropping his unused weapon looking around frantically at the moving shadows feeling the air around him becoming colder and long claws dragging down his spine. Quickly mumbling a short chant three times he vanished before he could meet the same fate as his friend. The shadows stilled and the cool air became warm again as the afternoon sun shined through as if nothing just happened.

Pulling him along she dragged him through the barrier taking him to the fountain pool that stood tall with the twin sister’s statue in the middle of the clear fresh water. Where her families head stones circled around the fountain in an intricate pattern; dragging him over the moss stone rim into the cooling water. He shivered from the coolness, despite his body temperature being abnormally unusually high for werewolf.

“Famelious cethratrion devolt maiyar fegili” she held him upright with her eyes closed as she chanted over and over again till the gray vein lines crept onto the waters surface and out of the fountain into the woods going towards the hunters that tried to shoot the three wolves. Being instantly struck with surprise and fear they couldn’t move as the poison attacked their nervous system and they all dropped to their knees feeling the effect the wolfsbane had on them as if they were wolves. Herring them all cry out in agony as one by one they all fell heavily to the ground blood pulled out of their mouths and eyes. Feeling a gentle hand lightly brush her cheek that made her jerk back and let him go, slightly surprised she was to see him move when she wasn’t expecting for him to touch her. “Your nose is bleeding.” He said, watching as her eyes faded back to brown while he linked his siblings so they could see once again through his eyes to know where to come. “Alaric, how did she heal you? I can’t feel your pain anymore.” Alec said, running in the direction of their brother with the other two fallowing close behind him. “Yeah, I’ve never heard of a mystic being able to do what she just did to those hunters.” Alex said, catching up to Alec with Ace next to them as well.

With them slowing their strides as they approached the moss covered stone walls. “She did some kind of spell that had the poison leaving my body and going somewhere else. But I think the spell was too much , her nose is bleeding and she looks a little pale.” Alaric said, still watching her carefully as he sat up feeling his strength and wolf coming back to him. “Um, thanks it happens I’m fine.” She said, wiping her nose of the blood as she stood on shaken legs walking to the edge of the fountain. “You don’t seem fine. You look tired.” Alaric said, reaching out just in time to catch her stumble backward into his arms. When she looked up seeing the three wolves approaching them. Huh? I thought that no one could walk through the barrier. Or maybe it was still open when I dragged him through it? The confused thought went through her mind seeing the barrier shimmer indicating that it was still standing.

Hearing bones crack and shift drew her attention back to the three werewolves that are now in their human form before her. “Is she okay?” Alec asked, walking over to them gently lifting her chin up so he could get a better look at her. “I think she needs some rest.” Alaric said, still holding her around the waist while their other two brothers looked around the very huge cemetery. “Why does this place look familiar?” Alex asked looking over at Ace who stood in front of the headstone three rows ahead of him. “It’s because this is the Montero and Delo Vega and Cabot family cemetery and estate.” Ace said, sighing deeply as he cut off the mind link. Alaric and Alec both glanced around the area and then back at her seeing that she fell asleep in his arms.

“I would suggest you leave but I get the feeling that you’ll be walking through my barrier to see her.” A deep inhuman voice came from behind the fountain, stepping through the shadows from the tall oak and willow tree’s. Going into protective mode they bared their large fangs at the demon that looked very bored who was covered in that lanky hunter’s blood. “You were the one that killed that hunter?” Alaric asked, getting a faint whiff of the humans blood on his clothes. “I did, I would have killed the other one but the witch escaped.” Alden said, shrugging his shoulders as he flicked his hand causing Sienna to vanish from Alaric’s hold an reappear in his arms.

“Why are you here?” Alex growled , stepping forward as his claws lengthened. “I’m her protector and still her guardian. I knew you four were coming it was just a matter of when.” Alden said, in his cryptic tone while he walked back to the estate with the four confused wolves fallowing close behind him. “A demon, as a guardian to a mystic? It’s never been heard of.” Alec said, thinking out loud as he looked around the very huge home. “Her parents summoned me to watch after her the night they died from those witches and hunter’s. I brought her back here and reinforced the barrier that’s around the property.” Alden said, as they walked up the grand staircase and down the hall turning down three long hallways seeing all of the family portraits from the current going all the way back to when the estate was first built.

They entered her room, while Alden laid her down on her bed pulling her throw blanket over her shoulders as he turned to leave. Flickering his hand once again that had clothes materializing on the ottoman at the end of her bed. “I assume those will fit you.” He said, stepping out of the room when Ace turned to him asking, “What did you mean you saw us coming?” Sighing he turned back to them as he answered his question, “I had a vision that you four will find her eventually, since her families estate borders your pack lands. Not that much open unclaimed territory sits between you and her.” He said, waiting for them to ask yet another tedious question. “I thought it was forbidden for mystics to summon a demon. So why would her parents risk that?” Alec asked , while they got dressed they all waited for him to answer.

“I owed them a favor, and I guess they didn’t really care that the spirits wouldn’t be too kindly about them summoning me to rescue their only daughter and last living descendant.” He shrugged walking out of the room with his tail slithering behind him as the halls became dark and eire with the setting sun when a loud crackling and booming rumbled across the clouds with lightning streaking across the dark sky with the heavy down pour of the rain fallowed. “What do we do?” Alex asked , sitting down beside her lightly brushing a long strand of hair from her face.

“She knows what we are and we know what she is. I doubt she’ll want to leave the only home she’s ever known.” Alec said, taking a seat on the ottoman leaning back on to the huge fluffy pillow. “It’s that, and the elders. You know what they’ll say if they know that our mate is a mystic.” Alaric said, as the three of them looked to their brother who leaned against the wall quiet this whole time. “They really can’t tell us anything, it’s our pack and she’s our mate. And if they have a problem with it they can be cast out; at least they’ll still be living.” Ace said, looking over to his brothers who were in agreement with him.

“But for now we stay with her till we know those hunters and their witch won’t come back here.” Alex said, walking out of the room and heading downstairs. “One of us should go with him. He could be going to hunt.” Alaric said, looking at Alec as he stood. Nodding he pushed off her dresser as they both left the room closing the door behind them and going in search for their brother…
