Chapter 1 - The Sound That Connects Us

The sky had begun to cloud over since early morning, as if it wanted to foreshadow what would happen that day. Heavy clouds moved slowly over the school, hiding the brightness of the sun.

Haru walked alone through the hallway, as he almost always did. He wasn’t the kind of boy who drew attention: his dark hair fell over his forehead, his grades were average, and his voice was rarely heard in class. To most, he was simply “that quiet classmate.”

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to speak, but words seemed heavier for him than for others. He preferred to observe in silence, to imagine stories in his head, and to lose himself in the small details others overlooked. Sometimes, all he wished for was to escape the noise and find a corner where he could breathe in peace.

He had found that corner on the rooftop. It wasn’t a place students were allowed to go, but the gate had no lock and few bothered to climb up. From there, he could see the courtyard, the neighborhood buildings, and most of all, the open sky.

That day, like so many times before, he decided to go up. He wanted to get away from the murmurs, from the laughter that always seemed to exclude him. However, when he pushed the metal door open and stepped onto the rooftop, he noticed something different.

He wasn’t alone.

A girl stood by the railing, gazing at the horizon. Her light brown hair swayed softly with the breeze, and her spotless uniform seemed to glow even beneath the gray sky.

Aki.

It was impossible not to recognize her. Aki was the most popular girl in school. Always surrounded by friends, always with a smile that lit up the hallway. Teachers praised her, students admired her, and to Haru, she belonged to an entirely different world.

He froze at the doorway. For a second he thought of turning around and leaving, but curiosity stopped him.“...Ah... sorry,” he murmured, barely audible.

Aki turned slowly, and in that gesture there was no trace of the radiant energy she always showed in class. Her eyes, calm and deep, looked at him as if seeing him for the very first time.“It’s okay,” she replied with a quiet voice, so different from the cheerful tone she used with everyone else.

Before he could say another word, a drop fell onto the concrete floor. Then another, and another, until the rain began to cover everything with a steady murmur. The entire world was filled with a single sound: rain falling on roofs, railings, and puddles.

Haru took a step back, thinking of going inside. But Aki didn’t move. She remained there, beneath the rain, as if she were listening to a secret.

“The sound of the rain...” she said softly. “I’ve always thought it was beautiful.”

Her words surprised him. Haru, slowly getting soaked, stared at her.

She stretched out her hand, letting the droplets slide across her skin. Her lips formed a slight curve-not the practiced smile she wore in the hallways, but something sincere, intimate.“It’s as if the world goes silent just to let it speak.”

Haru felt a knot in his throat. He didn’t know how to answer. He simply closed his eyes for a moment and listened. And then he understood what Aki meant: the rain had a rhythm, a whisper that could wash away worries and strip people of words.

There, drenched, they remained in silence. Two people who had never had a real reason to meet. She, the popular girl everyone admired. He, the invisible boy almost no one noticed.

Yet, in that moment, those differences seemed to fade away. They weren’t the popular student and the invisible student. They were simply two people listening to the same rain.

The bell announcing the end of break rang in the distance, but neither of them moved right away. Time, at least on the rooftop, had been suspended.

Haru opened his eyes and looked at Aki once more. There was something about her that didn’t match the image everyone else had: a hidden loneliness, a silence that only revealed itself when it rained.

That was the first moment they shared.A simple moment, but impossible to forget.

Because sometimes, the beginning of a story doesn’t happen with words... but with the sound of the rain.
