Chapter One – The Meeting Beneath the Moon

The forest slept under the watch of a silver moon. Crickets hummed softly in the brush, and fireflies traced glowing patterns between the trees. It should have been peaceful.

But the quiet was broken by the crunch of hurried footsteps.

Selene Noctis ran, her breath misting in the night air. Her cloak, dark as obsidian, whipped behind her as she darted between trees. The shadows seemed to chase her, moving unnaturally—stretching long fingers, hissing with voices that were not human.

“Persistent tonight, aren’t you?” she muttered, tightening her grip on the crescent-shaped dagger in her hand.

The creatures closed in, eyes like coals flickering in the darkness. She slashed the air, her blade glowing faintly with captured moonlight, scattering them back for a moment. But she was tiring. For every shadow she cut down, two more rose.

Selene’s boot caught a root and she stumbled into a clearing. The ground here pulsed faintly with life, the grass glowing a soft green. The shadows recoiled as though they had stepped into sacred ground.

Selene blinked, realizing she was not alone.

At the center of the clearing stood a girl—tall, serene, with antlers crowned in crystal and vines trailing down like living ornaments. Her turquoise eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight, both gentle and fierce.

The girl raised a hand. Roots burst from the earth, twisting upward like serpents. They wrapped around the shadows and dragged them screaming back into the ground. Within moments, silence returned.

Selene exhaled, straightening warily. “…Well. That’s one way to do it.”

The antlered girl turned her gaze to her, expression unreadable.

“You bring corruption into my forest.” Her voice was calm, but firm, like the rustle of leaves before a storm. “Why?”

Selene smirked faintly, masking her exhaustion. “Trust me, sweetheart, I didn’t exactly plan a midnight jog through your garden. Those things don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”

The girl tilted her head, studying her. “You reek of shadow. You are not welcome here.”

Selene’s smirk faltered just a little. She adjusted her grip on the dagger, defensive. “I didn’t ask to be. I just needed a place to breathe for once.”

For a long moment, the two regarded each other in silence—the wanderer cloaked in night, and the guardian clothed in earthlight.

Finally, the antlered girl spoke, softer now. “…You may rest until dawn. Then you leave.”

Selene raised an eyebrow. “Generous. Do you offer all your trespassers a bedtime story too?”

No reaction—except perhaps the faintest narrowing of her eyes.

Selene sighed and slid the dagger back into its sheath. “Fine. One night. Then I’m gone.”

The girl gave a single nod, turning away. “I am Eira Sylvara. Guardian of this forest. Do not forget where you stand.”

Selene smirked again, though her gaze lingered on the glowing roots beneath their feet.

“Selene,” she replied, voice quiet but steady. “Guardian of nothing. At least… not anymore.”

The moon rose higher, casting light over the unlikely pair—two guardians from different worlds, whose paths had just crossed for the first time.

And neither yet knew how much their lives were about to change.
