Prologue - Pine and Smoke
There are places where stories don’t begin with a bang but with a name: spoken soft, as if someone were testing whether it might echo back.
In Long Pine, Georgia, Ryder was one of those names. Folks said it like a prayer half-swallowed, as if the wrong syllable might rouse something best left sleeping.
No one could quite say where its weight came from. Some whispered of old fights behind closed doors, of back roads that carried more than dust, of nights when porch lights burned till dawn. Others said the name itself was cursed, carrying trouble like a seed in the blood.
Either way, it clung. It moved through the county like smoke through pine, staining what it touched, marking houses with silence, leaving warnings carved into wood where no one admitted carving them.
It should have faded, worn thin with time.
But it hadn’t.
It lingered—thin as breath, heavy as resin—in the pauses of conversation, in the quick shifting of eyes, in the uneasy stillness that came whenever Ryder was spoken aloud.
