REMARRIAGE

I stood beside my mom, a maid of honor in more ways than one, as she exchanged vows with Marcus. The sunlight streaming through the church windows highlighted her serene smile, and I tried to muster up some enthusiasm for the union. I knew she'd been lonely after the divorce, and maybe this was exactly what she needed – stability, security, and someone to care for her. But as Marcus's eyes met mine, I caught a flicker of intensity that made my skin prickle. It was a fleeting glance, but it left me wondering if I'd imagined the hint of fascination that seemed to simmer beneath his polished demeanor. I quickly looked away, focusing on the bouquet of flowers in my hands, my mind drifting to the reception and the inevitable small talk that would follow.

As the ceremony ended, my mom turned to me with tears in her eyes.

"Thank you, sweetie," she whispered, hugging me tightly. Marcus smiled warmly at us both, his eyes lingering on me for a moment before he turned back to my mom.

"You look beautiful," he said, his voice low and smooth.

"I'm the lucky one." My mom blushed, and I forced a smile, feeling a little like a third wheel.

"Let's get this party started!", Marcus exclaimed, offering my mom his arm. She took it, and they walked down the aisle together, leaving me to follow behind with the rest of the wedding party. As we made our way to the reception, Marcus turned back to me and smiled.

"Sophia, you're going to make some man very happy one day." I felt a shiver run down my spine at the way he said my name, the way he looked at me. I smiled politely, but inside, I was wondering what exactly I'd just gotten myself into.
