Chapter One – The Stranger in the Dark
The rain tapped gently against the glass windows of Café Nocturne, the kind of drizzle that blurred the city lights into hazy golden smears. Elena Marlowe wrapped her fingers around her coffee cup, savoring its warmth as her laptop screen glowed with an unfinished article. The cursor blinked accusingly, daring her to find the words.
Her editor’s warning echoed in her mind: “One more missed deadline, Elena, and you’re out.” But for the first time in years, the story wasn’t coming.
The café door swung open with a gust of cold night air, scattering the scent of rain and cedarwood into the room. Elena’s eyes flicked up—and froze.
He walked in like he owned the night. Tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored black coat, his presence drew every glance in the café without effort. Dark hair framed a face that was both sharp and unreadable, his gaze sweeping the room with quiet calculation before settling on a corner seat.
Elena told herself to look away. To focus on her article. But something about him—something in the way he carried himself—stirred her curiosity. Not handsome in the ordinary sense, but dangerously magnetic, as if secrets clung to his very shadow.
Minutes later, her phone buzzed with an anonymous text.
> “Stop digging into what isn’t yours, or you won’t live to regret it.”
Her blood ran cold. She hadn’t told anyone about her investigation into the missing senator’s aide—not even her closest friend. Only her editor knew. And now… this.
Heart racing, Elena’s gaze lifted instinctively to the stranger in the corner. He was watching her now, his expression unreadable, his fingers idly tracing the rim of his glass.
Their eyes locked for only a heartbeat, but it was enough. Elena knew two things in that instant:
1. The man was connected to her story.
2. And getting close to him could be the most dangerous mistake of her life.
Yet as the storm outside deepened, Elena couldn’t ignore the pull. A whisper in the back of her mind told her that danger and desire were about to become inseparable.
