Chapter 1

The sky was clear; a warm breeze blew through the trees making the leaves rustle. The flowers were in bloom; their fragrance filled the surroundings. Birds chirped softly, their song felt like gentle music to the ears. The lake was still; its water as clear as the sky during sunrise. She sat beside the lake, immersed in the beauty of the world. Everything felt too ethereal, too beautiful and too calming to be true. It was as if she was in heaven.

Suddenly the clouds rumbled, thunder struck the ground and the wind howled. The sky turned dark, the flowers once in full bloom wilted, the birds stopped chirping and flew back to their nests. It was as if someone had angered the god. She stood up still looking at the sky, she had an immense faith in God; that he wouldn’t destroy everything and he had a good reason for this much anger.

All of a sudden, she was somewhere else, in someone’s arms. She could feel an intense pain as if she was being ripped apart from her soul, as if she was disappearing for good. But this didn’t hurt as much as she was in pain of leaving someone, someone she loved, someone she would sacrifice anything for. She lifted her eyes to look at the man she was unwilling to leave, but her eyes blurred. He was crying, holding her dearly as if his embrace could stop her death.

“I will find you — we will meet again. Always...”

The buzzing of the alarm woke her up. She reached over and turned it off, sitting upright. She still felt tired, as if she hadn’t slept a wink last night. The heaviness in her chest and the emptiness she felt were hard to ignore. It was as if she had lost the only thing she ever cared for. It wasn’t new — she felt it every day; the emptiness and the grief upon waking up.

She got ready for her college, today was her first day back after the end of the 3rd semester holidays. It was tiring, having to go to college every day with no friend and absolutely no one to talk to. The girls would avoid her and the guys would challenge each other to pursue her, truly exhausting...

By the time she reached college, she was thirty minutes late. She walked her way to the classroom slowly; as if she had all the time in the world, as if she wasn’t already late.

She entered the class, as usual it was noisy. No matter how hard she tried she still couldn’t get used to the noise. It always irritated her — felt too unnatural to her; as if she belonged to the calmness and not this chaos. She silently went to the back row and sat alone, away from everyone’s sight.

Professor Matthew hadn’t arrived yet. She was lucky to not get lectured by him on the first day of her fourth semester. He always scolded her for being so uninterested, for looking so lost. She also craved something that would interest her, but she had yet to find it.
