Chapter 1

The unexpected

I awoke in my quarters, a small yawn escaping my lips as I moved. “Miss. Krau?” Lopez spoke softly, knocking. “What?!” I shouted out, not paying attention to my tone.

“Sir Myers would like to speak to you,” I could hear him sigh loudly through the door, “Tell him I will meet with him in a moment.” I turned over and checked the time on my battery clock. After the apocalypse broke out, we had to resort to anything battery-powered, no plug-ins.

I sat up, moving out from the blankets and rubbing under my eyes, and looked at my fingers. Leftover mascara, I still wear mascara even if I don’t wear anything else on my face. I wear it for a few days before removing it. I know it’s a waste, but I enjoy looking presentable. I grabbed a wipe from my drawer and cleaned my face before dressing myself in my usual black cropped tank top and jean shorts, along with my socks and boots. After the first strike at the beginning of the outbreak, I only had the clothing I owned, so I wear what isn’t dirty, even if I didn’t enjoy wearing tighter clothes. Finally, putting back on my mascara and curling my lashes, and brushing out my hair. I make my way out of my room door, being greeted by General Myers and 2 of his men.

“Well, good morning, General.” My tone was serious and tired, with a small smile on my face. Watching him and his men bow, my eyebrows furrowed. “Do not bow. You’ve earned my respect not to have to do that.” I spoke firmly and assertively. “My apologies, Leader Krau, and good morning.” He smiled and nodded, moving back up. “What caused you to speak to me this early?” I questioned, tilting my head slightly. “Well, we have a.. Um,” he paused slightly, taking a breath, almost questioning himself. “A visitor.” He finished, looking back up. “A what?” I spoke, my eyes widening.
