Chapter 1: The First Sign of Fall
The breeze was brisk and carried a scent Lily loved—crisp apples, pumpkin spice, and the faint hint of cinnamon. Her favorite trees in the backyard were turning, their leaves a riot of fiery reds, bright oranges, and golden yellows. Lily loved watching the way the leaves shimmered in the sunlight, each one seeming like a tiny flame flickering in the wind.
Today, she was lying on her back in the grass, head tilted toward the sky, watching leaves drift lazily down. Her fingers brushed over the soft blades of grass and the crunchy leaves beneath her. It was her favorite time of year—the air cool but not cold, the world painted in warm colors, and the promise of cozy nights ahead.
As she reached out to catch a falling leaf, her hand brushed against something hard and smooth buried beneath the dried leaves. Curious, Lily sat up and brushed aside the brittle debris. There, half-buried in the dirt, was a small object that shimmered with a strange glow. It sparkled like it contained tiny stars.
Her eyes widened. It was a tiny acorn, but unlike any she’d ever seen before. Its surface shimmered with a golden hue, almost as if it was made of sunlight. Lily carefully picked it up, feeling a gentle warmth spread through her fingertips.
“Wow,” she whispered, cradling it in her palm. “This is… amazing.”
Just as she studied the glowing acorn, a sudden gust of wind swept through the yard. Leaves twirled and danced around her, caught in an invisible current. The acorn’s glow grew brighter, flickering like a heartbeat, and the world around her seemed to shimmer and sway.
Suddenly, everything went dark.
