Chapter 1: The Decision

Lily sat on the old bench beneath the tall oak tree, the cool autumn breeze messing up her dark hair. The retreat has been going on for three days, but Lily’s heart felt no closer to finding the answers she so desperately searched for. For months now, she had been struggling with a question that repeated in her mind. What is my purpose?

Her friends seemed to know what they wanted out of life. It appeared that her friends knew exactly what they wanted in life. Sarah was going to be a doctor,Lucas dreamed of being a professional soccer player, and Emma...well, Emma always had some grand idea about making the world a better place. They spoke with such confidence, their voices full of certainty as they talked about their dreams. But Lily? She couldn’t even finish a simple art project without feeling doubtful if it was good enough.

Her family was loving, but the expectations of her to do well in school, to participate in church activities, to be a good daughter, and to be successful in whatever she chose to do, always seemed to hang over her like a shadow. It was a shadow she could never shake off, no matter how hard she tried. It felt like no matter where she turned, there were too many things telling her who she should be — her parents, her friends and even strangers at church. But Lily couldn’t help but wonder: Who did God want her to be?

The retreat was supposed to help her find the answers, but so far, it had only left her feeling more lost. There had been talks about God’s love, Bible verses to memorize, and prayers to recite, but none of it seemed to reach her. The campfire sessions were supposed to ignite something in her soul, but every word the speaker said felt distant, as though it was meant for someone else.

"Lily, are you ok?" Emmas voice broke through her thoughts. Lily looked up too see her friend standing in front of her, concern etched across her face. Emma had always been the compassionate one in their group, always looking out for others. Lily appreciated it, but in that moment, she didn't feel like talking.

"I'm fine," Lily muttered brushing a strand of hair from her face. She forced a smile, but Emma wasn’t fooled.

"Are you sure? You've been quiet weekend I know it's been hard for you, but don't you feel like God has been speaking to you this weekend?"

Lily sighed, feeling a pang of guilt. "I don’t know... I guess I'm just not getting it. Everyone else seems so sure about things. They know what they want to do, who they want to be. But I... I don’t know what to do with my life."

Emma sat beside her on the bench, crossing her legs beneath her. "I get that. It's not easy, but you know, God doesn't expect us to have everything figured out right now. He's patient with us. He's not in a rush."

Lily glanced at Emma, grateful fir her word but feeling a knot tighten in her chest. "But how do you know? How do I know if I'm doing the right thing? If I'm even... good enough for Him?"

Emma placed a gentle hand on Lily’s arm. "Lily, God doesn't care about being 'good enough'. He cares about your heart. He loves you for who you are, not for what you can do or achieve. He just wants you to trust Him."

Lily turned her gaze to the sky, the colors of the sunset streaking across the horizon, but her heart felt heavy. "I don't know if I can trust Him, Emma. I’ve tried praying. I’ve gone to church. But I don't feel like I'm any closer to finding things out. "

Emma smiled softly, squeezing her arm. "It's ok. It's ok to not have all the answers. Sometimes, God just wants us to take the next step. You don't have to figure it out in one go."

For a long moment, the two girls sat in silence, watching the sky turn from orange to deep purple. The campgrounds were quiet now, save for the soft sounds of the wind rustling through the trees. After a while, the sound of the retreat leader’s voice echoed through the air, calling everyone to gather around the campfire for the final session. Lily stood up brushing off the dirt from her jeans.

"Are you coming?" Emma asked, standing as well.

Lily hesitated. Part of her wanted to stay here away from the crowd, where things felt less complicated. But another part of her felt a pull, a whisper in her heart that maybe she needed to be there.

"Yeah," she said quietly, forcing a small smile "I'll come."

The campfire crackled as the final session began. Lily sat near the back, surrounded by the flickering light of dozens of others. The retreat leader, Mr Jenkins, stood at the front, his hands raised in the air.

"Tonight, I want to talk about something that I believe is the most important decision you’ll ever make in your life." Mr Jenkins said, his voice carrying over the hush of the crowd, "Its not about what career you choose, or who you become when you grow up, it's the choice to follow Jesus and make Him the center of your life."

Lily shifted uncomfortably in her seat, trying not to let her thoughts wander. She knew what he was going to say. She’d heard it a hundred times before at church: Follow Jesus, accept Him into your heart, live for Him. But every time she tried to picture it for herself, it felt distant, almost impossible.

"You might be sitting there, thinking, 'I don't know enough' or 'I haven't been good enough.' But let me tell you something — Jesus didn’t die for perfect people. He died for broken people. People like you and me. And He wants to give you a new life. A life filled with purpose, filled with love, and filled with hope."

Lily’s heart began to race as the words sank in. Purpose. She had been searching for it everywhere. She thought it would come from being good enough, from meeting the expectations of others, from finding success in something. But what if... what if purpose wasn’t something you had to chase after? What if it was something God gave freely?

Mr Jenkins continued "I want to invite any of you who are ready to make the decision to follow Jesus tonight. If you’re ready to accept Him as your Savior, to give your life to Him, come forward. Don’t wait for tomorrow. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Come to Him as you are."

Lily felt a stirring in her chest. The fear, the uncertainty, the questions she had been carrying for so long... they suddenly felt lighter. Maybe she didn’t need all the answers right now. Maybe all she needed to do was take a step toward Jesus. She stood up, her legs shaky but determined, and walked toward the front of the circle. The voices of her friends, the doubts in her head, the expectations of everyone around her... they all faded as she knelt by the fire, feeling a warmth that wasn’t just from the flames.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she whispered. "Jesus, I give my life to You. I don’t know what’s ahead, but I trust You with it. Please show me the purpose You have for me."

And in that moment, Lily felt something she had never felt before. Peace. Real, lasting peace that settled deep within her soul. She didn’t have all the answers. But she didn’t need to. All she needed to do was take that first step—and Jesus would guide her from there.

As the retreat ended the next morning, Lily felt like a different person. She wasn’t sure what the future held, but for the first time, she was ready to face it. Not with fear, but with faith. God had a plan for her, and that was all that mattered.

She met Emma by the old oak tree again before leaving, and Emma smiled brightly at her. "How are you feeling?" she asked, her voice gentle.

Lily looked at her with a newfound confidence. "I think I'm finally starting to figure it out."

Emma hugged her tightly. "I'm so proud of you, Lily."

Lily smiled back, knowing that this was just the beginning of a new journey. A journey of trust, of hope, and of purpose.
