Summary

For Liyana, it's a message on a glowing phone screen - the words that end a love she thought would last. She's left staring at the emptiness in her chest, wondering why hearts have to change. For Mikael, it's the flatline of a monitor and the echo of laughter that will never return. Three years of joy, gone in a moment, leaving him with nothing but guilt and silence. They don't know each other yet. But grief has a way of recognizing itself in another soul. But life always works in a funny way, crossing their paths together. Prologue

The sun still hasn't rise, yet a woman sat by her bed, praying for comfort to soothe her raging heart. Her eyes glared at the screen, hoping it was just her sleepy eyes playing illusions. But no matter how many times she glanced at her phone screen, the message didn't change.

Change. Right, change.

It was something that she was always afraid of. Why do people need to change? Why is changes important? Why can't the heart keep feeling what it used to feel?

"I'm sorry. Truly. We tried our best," The doctor squeezed his shoulder lightly, in hopes that it would offer some sort of comfort. He couldn't even cry for her anymore. As if it had been dried out of his body.

His knees buckled under him, ears ringing as his mother rushed to his side, hugging his trembling body. His whole world shattered. Was it his fault? It's definitely his fault. If he had rushed to the hospital earlier, if he had woken up earlier, she would have been saved.

He could still hear her laughter just hours ago. They were cuddling on the couch as he listened to her whimsical dreams of wanting to marry a prince charming once she grew up. He could still remember the day when he took her in — the shy smile on her face as she peaked her head out from her room.

She was his whole world. His bundle of joy despite not having any blood relation. She was his pride. Those 3 years was the happiest he's ever been in his life.

She showed up in his life unannounced and left it just the same.
