Lines We Can’t Cross

Everything had been falling into place during my pregnancy. My belly had blossomed into a perfect little watermelon, round and undeniable. Love and support surrounded me—from my family, from Michael’s. Today was special: Dana and I were hitting the baby stores, hunting for girl’s clothes. Because you could never have too many baby things. My little angel deserved the best.

I was wrapped up in a cozy, stretchy sweater and black leggings, my usual go-to for comfort and style. Black leather boots and a matching fur-trimmed jacket—Christmas gifts from Michael—completed the look. He spoiled me rotten, and I let him. Today, I was armed with cash he’d eagerly sent through CashApp, insisting I buy things for me and the baby. Why argue?

But as soon as I stepped downstairs, the scene in the kitchen stopped me cold. Eric. Shirtless, water running over his hands, the soft scrape of dishwashing. His body—a flawless sculpture of muscle and control—caught the light just right. I bit my lip, savoring the sight, before slipping quietly toward the door. Right now, I had the best of both worlds. Eric, my handsome, edgy housemate who helped around the place, and Michael, my boyfriend, the man whose child I carried.

Eric always left just before Michael’s visits. No, Eric and I weren’t sleeping together. He took the couch anyway and me, the room. He had agreed to move out soon—just hadn’t found the right place yet. Two grown adults navigating a breakup on their own messy terms. Divorce next. Simple right?

No one knew Eric was here—not even Zoey. And Michael? That secret was locked tight, buried deep. He could never. EVER. KNOW!

Outside, the winter air hit me with a sharp, fresh rush. Dana waved through the window with that familiar rumble in her voice. “Get in here, Cora, before you freeze solid.”

I crossed the front lawn in a rush and let myself in. Passenger princess, ready for the day.

It was mid-March. Bare branches stretched against a dull sky, winter’s hush hanging heavy but electric. I stole a glance at the mountain behind my house, its rugged beauty grounding me. Summerdale was raw and real; it had grown on me, replacing the dread I’d felt before the pregnancy. This was home.

Dana’s voice pulled me back from the edge of my thoughts. “So… how’s my neicy poo?”

I laughed, throwing my head back, eyes on the road ahead. “She’s active as hell. Kicks like crazy, especially when I take hot showers.”

“You’re scathing her, Cora. Straight-up torture.”

“No way,” I giggled. “She probably wonders what the hell that noise is when the shower beats down on my belly.”

“Tell it like it is.”

Dana was my rock—my constant. We were inseparable now that ballet was off the table. Days filled with yoga, late-night movies, endless shopping trips, and dinners.

We rolled into Sterling, traffic thick with cars, luxury storefronts flashing their bright signs. Inside Koala Baby—no ordinary baby store, but a designer’s dream—I found a rack of dresses with tutus attached, one almost identical to a ballet dress I used to rehearse in. So cute. Dana picked up a pink jean jacket.

“This would go perfect with that.”

“I’ll take both,” I said, that gnawing need to give my baby the best flaring up.

We piled armfuls of adorable clothes into the shopping wagon.

“I don’t even know where I’m going to put all this,” I muttered, dragging the wagon toward the counter.

“Simple,” Dana said with a smirk. “Mikey’s condo has closets the size of my bathroom. Seriously, they’re massive.”

“I’m not moving in with Michael.” I laughed. Why would she think I was?

“That’s not what he told me. Said he already set up a room for the baby.”

“Probably for when we visit,” I said, frustration creeping in.

Dana blinked, shocked by my defensiveness.

“Okay, Cora.” She softened, placing a hand on my shoulder. “You should talk to him.”

But I knew better. There was more beneath the surface. I needed to call Michael, make it clear: no one was dictating my life.

I piled the clothes on the counter without her help. Didn’t want it. My anger burned. Them having secret chats about me and the baby? What was I supposed to think? That my simple life in the woods wasn’t enough? I wanted my baby raised surrounded by nature, away from society’s noise. A quiet, uncomplicated existence.

The total on the screen made my eyes widen: $2,320.32.

Was this really me? Spending thousands on things a baby could do without? Sure, she’d be just fine in simple onesies. But Michael had the means, and honestly, I was done second-guessing every little thing. My baby deserved the best. I swiped my CashApp card, feeling a small rush of satisfaction.

Outside, as we loaded the bags into the trunk, Dana hesitated, her hands on the steering wheel.

“Cora,” she said carefully, “is everything okay?”

“I just hate that Michael’s making decisions without me.”

“I get it. You need to talk to him. But maybe… it’s not such a bad idea.”

“You guys don’t get to decide!”

Maybe it was the hormones. The due date looming, the pressure squeezing tight. But I was furious.

Dana looked hurt, and I almost felt guilty. Going to Boston was a huge move—too far. Leaving family, starting over. The thought terrified me. But Dana cared. Michael cared. They weren’t the enemy.

“I’m sorry. Just… hormones. Worrying. Let’s get some food.”

She sighed. “Probably why you’re acting so bitchy.”

“Aye,” I said, clutching my chest mockingly.

“Just kidding. Where to, preggo?”

“Craving something succulent. Juicy. Meat.”

“A penis?”

“Dana!”

“Well, you said it.”

We ended up at Desert and Cactus Steakhouse. I ordered a rack of ribs, their signature mac and cheese, and a Caesar salad. Dana went for chicken Alfredo. We swapped bites, laughter easing the tension. I paid for our meal, an apology for snapping.

By six, Dana dropped me off. She wanted to help with the bags, but I said no. Eric was inside. My secret. She probably wondered why a Hellcat was parked in my driveway every time she picked me up.

I hauled the heavy bags and leftovers inside, relief flooding me when her tires rolled away. But then Eric appeared, close and dangerous, a grin tugging at his lips that made me shiver.

“Want me to take those up for you, my pregnant wife?” His voice was smooth, teasing. Joking.

I scolded him with a smirk, but I knew it bit at him that this baby wasn’t his. He carried his pain with quiet grace.

“Please,” I said, dropping the bags. My pelvis ached, and I needed to sit.

He lifted them effortlessly, heading to the nursery, then put my food in the fridge.

When he returned, he settled beside me on the couch. His hand reached out, thumb brushing something from the corner of my mouth, making my breath catch. Signature move. So familiar.

“Still a messy eater, huh?” His voice was velvet, low and controlled. His eyes flicked to my breasts—they’d grown. Then to my belly. A flash of pain crossed his face.

“I found a place,” he said quietly. “I’m moving soon.”

I sighed. “Okay.”

Later that night, I lay sprawled across my bed, wrapped in pink sheer onesie, lingerie that clung to every new curve—pregnancy had only made me bolder. I snapped a few scandalous photos for Michael, nipples hard, my heat visible to tease, my lips parted, eyes heavy with want. Pregnancy, I’d discovered, made my body ache for touch in ways I’d never expected. I wanted him to remember what he was missing, wanted him restless and thinking of me when he closed his eyes at night.

Michael: Damn baby. Gonna make me hop on a damn plane right now. 😩

Me: 🍆🍑💦😬

Michael: Just you wait. When I get there, lets just say, we ain’t making it to the bedroom.

Afterward, I tucked my favorite pillow between my thighs, settling in for sleep. But then, right when I was drifting off, the baby pressed down, urgent and insistent. Had to pee. I groaned, rolling to the edge of the bed, barely managing to sit upright. I let out a long, exasperated breath before slipping off the edge, feet finding the cool floor.

It had become a ritual—cradling my belly as I padded through the dark house, blaming the baby for every midnight interruption. The hallway was shrouded in shadows, everything quiet and still. I made it to the bathroom, relieved myself, washed my hands, and turned toward the door, still half-asleep.

That’s when I nearly collided with Eric.

He caught me by the shoulders, his grip firm, steadying me. The contact sent a bolt of heat straight through me, my skin prickling under his hands.

“Sorry,” I whispered, unable to look at him, suddenly aware of every inch of my body and how little I was wearing.

He didn’t step away, not really. He just lingered, looming in the doorway, nothing on but a pair of black boxer briefs, moonlight tracing hard lines over his chest and abs. My breath caught. I felt the heat pulse low in my belly, pooling between my thighs.

His eyes drifted down my body, unapologetic, lingering on the stretch of my breasts beneath the sheer fabric—soft, swollen, impossible to hide. I knew that look. I remembered it deep in my bones—the way he could make me feel naked with just a glance.

“Did you need the bathroom?” I managed, voice softer than I meant. I was Michael’s now. Pregnant. Off-limits. God, I wanted him to stop looking at me like that.

“Yeah,” he said, his voice rough, sleep-drunk, but his gaze locked to mine. For a second, it was just us. Just the old ache, the tension that never really died between us. Then he stepped closer, his height blurring the moon light filling the hallway. We were both shadows, in this moment. My breath hitched as his lips came down, so close.

I could feel the want burning in his gaze like a live wire stretched too tight, threatening to snap at any second. His eyes searched mine, raw and desperate, the kind of look that held every unsaid thing between us—regret, longing, unspoken apologies, and the ghost of what we’d lost. For a breath, the world shrank to just that charged space between his face and mine, the faintest brush of warm air on my skin.

But before his lips could claim mine, panic ignited in my chest. I shoved him back—hard—hands trembling, breath ragged and uneven. My heart thundered like it wanted to outrun the moment. He stumbled just a step, enough to break the spell, and stared down at me, eyes wide—pained, almost pleading—but silent. Then, stubborn and resigned, he let me slip past.

I felt his gaze trail me as I backed away, heat radiating from him like a fire I couldn’t reach. His eyes lingered on the curve of my ass, an unspoken hunger and history tangled inside that quiet look. I trembled, vulnerable and exposed, every nerve alight as I hurried toward the safety of my room.

The door slammed softly behind me, and I sank against it, back heavy and knees weak. I tilted my head back, eyelids squeezed shut, fighting to steady the shock swirling through me. He was going to kiss me. He tried to. Hadn’t he understood by now—by the fragile shape of my swollen belly, by the quiet distance I’d carved between us—that it was over? That I was no longer his? That this life I carried belonged to Michael, and Michael was the man I’d promised myself to?

The faint sounds of the bathroom — the door closing behind him, the rush of the toilet flushing, the slap of water running over his hands — filled the stillness. I imagined him there, muscles taut, wrestling with the weight of all that had been. But then, no footsteps. Only pause. He was still there, still lingering, caught between leaving downstairs and something else I couldn’t name.

Then came slow, deliberate steps, heavy and hesitant, inching toward my door, then stopping. Hovering. My breath hitched, a flicker of fear sharpening inside me. I bit my lip, heart hammering hard against ribs that felt too tight. Please don’t cross that line. Please don’t reach for the knob.

But he didn’t. The sudden retreat was almost worse—a quiet retreat into the shadows downstairs, into the emptiness that filled the space where we once built a life.

Left trembling and hollow, I collapsed onto the bed. The ache between my thighs was twisted, a cruel echo of what we used to be—a bedroom alive with laughter, our bed where secrets were shared and promises whispered. Now? Eric was relegated to the couch, a fading chapter we both pretended had ended.

It was so fucking sad, the way things fell apart. Our ending. And no matter how much I wished otherwise—it was too late.
