And all I received was his face, menacingly morphed into a sinister smile. It crawled up his lips like a shadow taking form, as if he finally found me catching the reality. His head tilted left ways, casting his features in something far crueler than darkness. "Yes I am." He replied. There are two types of monsters-one, that gets furious on being called one, whose words bleed in cruelty, inhumanity and sins. They'll snarl, snap at you, deny but at the end, they'd be humans in their cruelest form. But the other one-they smile on being called a monster. Their smiles are the darkest, unfurling in a slow, cruel silence. And when that smile touches their lips, know that you're never finding your way out of their world. You're already theirs. And I, I'm trapped in his world, the world I once wanted to escape but later on became my home and the only place of comfort. "I'll break you till each piece has my name. And then, I'll make you like the way I want to see." She was his deepest desire, an obsession twisted by his insane thoughts. He was determined to claim her in the worst way possible.

Chapter 1

Main Song of the book : Wicked Games by The Weekend

Chapter 1 :

20 June, Wednesday, 2025

3:30 p.m.

ANVAYA'S POV

The grey clouds in the sky loomed over my head, as the soft cool breeze brushed past me running towards the sea. While the sea waves crashed against the shore, slow and soft drops from the heaviness of the clouds dropped.

I pulled over my dupatta over my head, as I ran towards the parking lot.

Quickly getting on my scooty, I wore my helmet and a long raincoat inside the plastic bag hanging down the racer, and rode off towards my rented home.

I usually enjoyed rainy weathers, but today I had a lot of tasks to complete back at home for the upcoming health campaign. So I had to hurry back home. It was already near six in the evening but it was quite like a relief because I got to leave earlier. Otherwise, I'd have reached home by 7 in the evening.

Rain drops slowly turned heavy, splashing against the helmet shield. My lips were getting wetter, and even though my body was covered, I could still feel the coldness.

But the coldness of rain in summer felt like the most beautiful feeling because the day would be burning like a furnace in Mumbai. We people literally boil here.

A smile curved up my lips, as I raced my scooty while the cold wind ran past me, along with the rain. I loved rain.

The clouds clashed, letting the lightning crack between them, giving off the beautiful whitish blue flickering in the sky. I smiled up at the sky, glancing in between the ride.

Soon, I entered the campus and rushed inside, making my way upstairs to the verandah. Firstly, I took off the rain coat and hung it on the stand placed exceptionally for raincoats, in the verandah. Then I took off my wet palm shoes and took out the key from my bag.

The house was silent, since Mridakshi and Nitya, my bestfriends, were at their work. Mridakshi's worked as a financial analyst as for a CA, at a company at around five kilometres from our home. And Nitya worked with me.

Mridakshi's parents were in America, given that her father was a scientist and her mother was so in love with her husband that she didn't want to leave him alone. So as a result, Mimi, nickname for her long name, stayed back here. She didn't have the heart to work abroad since we both had the dream to stay together even when we grew up.

And Nitya's parents lived in Delhi, being a working couple who couldn't shift to Mumbai. But we threeโ€”stuck to each other like leech to working away wasn't ever an option for us.

I plopped down on a wooden chair in my room, after turning on the fan and let my head fall back.

I was tired, because even though I was let go earlier, I had to work double to make up for the work I'd have missed for around three hours.

I'm a Cardiologist, but still I'm under training so I had the HOD ordering us around and making us work out asses off.

I rested for around five minutes, before I decided to take off the sticky clothes and take a bath.

5:37 p.m.

My life's been simple alwaysโ€”waking up, following my morning routine, eating the breakfast and leaving for work. Mimi would prepare the breakfast along with the lunch because she had her office starting from 9 and I had to leave at 7:30.

I'd prepare the dinner and if I returned earlier, I'd prepare the snack we'd have together at around 9 and then have the supper at 11. Sometimes Nitya would have her part.

Our schedule was quite unfit but the mismatch of our work routines led to the mess.

I said it's simple because that's what I'd been doing for a few years now. I'll become an independent doctor within a few months, after attempting the final exam. I recently submitted the thesis to the university, after working on it and correcting the mistakes marked by the higher upsโ€”which required me weeks for preparation.

But that's what it is about PG life in medical field, isn't it?

But nothing scared me more than the viva. I always cleared such exams but still, practical ones felt a bit scary.

My mind drifted off from the work thoughts towards the plant pot outside the window, placed on a wooden extension made outside the kitchen's window.

The beautiful small white pot had bloomed with a huge bunch of white kalanchoe. Their sweet fragrance had got mixed with the fresh fragrance of the earth after getting mixed with the rain. The combination was too addictive for me to leave the place.

Under the grey sky, with water from the roof dropping on the plant, the green garden full of flowers with a swing that belonged to the owner worked for a perfect background. The sky was somewhat clear at the far end so it was glowing in bright white, making the scenery look enchanting through the kitchen window.

It's good that we stayed on the second floor. The view of the garden below, with the monsoon sky above and many houses spread like a colorful duvet, was enough for me to sit in the balcony with a book and enjoy my time.

The house owners had this property made only to rent girls like us. They stayed somewhere else so it was good for us because we could enjoy and live without the tension of being nagged by the owner. They were kod though, unlike most owners here.

The first floor was rented out to a family, who had been staying here since very long. The couple were just married when they came here, and now they had a three year old healthy daughter. She was Barsha, a very cute little girl. She'd run to our apartment on Sundays, since I'd leave the door open only for her.

We'd play whenever I, Mimi and Nitya had time. Her sweet laughter, that beautiful toothy smile, those two tiny ponytails that bounced on her head like two coconut trees whenever she ran or jumpedโ€”her whole presence was wholesome. I just loved her so much.

I wish to have a daughter like her one day.

Turning off the gas, I covered the pan full of chili paneer. I decided to make something good today, because Mimi and Nitya always cooked so they also deserved a good treat sometimes.

I had already bought pulao from the restaurant near to the hospital I worked in. They had the best pulao. And with that, I had also bought some sweets for dessert.

My life was like any other medical student's life, a typical medical life.

Days would start with the tension of work and would end with the tension of the work waiting for the next day. I had not much time for myself but I guess, that's my fault because I chose this profession by myself. And I won't complain because I wanted to be a Cardiothoracic.

Sighing, I covered all the food and decided to read a book, before I drifted off to sleep in the balcony itself.

8:15 p.m.

The sound of doorbell ringing woke me up from my sleep, making me sit up on the hanging swing as I stretched my body.

I stood up, tying my hair as I made my way towards the main hall.

Opening the door, I wasn't just welcomed by my bestfriend but her fiancรฉ was there too.

I smiled at him, "Oh! Vyom, you're here too. Come inside."

I let them come inside before I closed the door and asked him to sit in the main hall.

"You didn't inform me that he was coming," I said to Mimi, as we made our way towards the kitchen.

"I called you bitch. Check your phone," she hissed, glaring at me before getting out of the kitchen whole I followed her.

"Ah! My phone was in the bedroom and I was in the balcony. Sorry!" I said with an apologetic smile, because it was my fault. I must've kept the phone on silent mode.

"I'll go and change and till then you can talk with him. I'll serve us dinner after getting fresh. And what about Nitya?" she said, looking at me once before picking up her clothes from the bed and made her way towards her washroom.

"She'll be late because of her shift." She gave a thumbs up to my response.

Nodding at her, I made my way towards the main hall, feeling happy for her that she was finally marrying her long time boyfriend, basically her boss.

Unlike her, I was still single. I didn't have the will to find someone till a few years back but now that I always see Mimi with Vyom, I also feel the wish to feel loved and have someone in my life too. I guess that's a basic human need, as you grow older.

Shaking my head, I entered the hall, serving Vyom some snacks and juice I had previously placed on the table in the dining area. Our house wasn't very spacious, but had enough space for a dining area, a main hall, a moderate kitchen, three bedrooms with three balconies and washrooms.

"So, Vyom, when's the marriage? I mean have you both discussed the date?" I asked, settling down on the sofa in front of him.

He was a handsome man in his early thirties, precisely 31 and Mimi was 26.

Olive skin with deep brown eyes and slightly wavy hair, he was an ideal man for any woman. Definitely he had to be because after attracting a bunch of red flags, she at the end found someone green for her. But Mimi was slightly fairer than him, with mid length straight black hair.

"Yeah we did. But we thought to do it once you and Nitya have cleared your exams. Like that, you'd be able to enjoy your bestfriend's wedding and with not much tension about studies," he replied with a smile.

I smiled back.

Mridakshi was actually the bestfriend as elder sister to me.

Definitely Nitya was another gift in my life too. And maybe, I'd done some really good deeds in my last birth to get them because everyone's a back biter now. And the fact that Mimi thought about me when it was her getting married, I could literally thank the seven heavens for that.
