(Prologue)

Once upon a time, a storm raged for three nights without rest, tearing the sky as if the heavens themselves were at war. Lightning split the darkness, revealing a shattered longship drifting ashore—its hull cracked and broken, its sails torn to ribbons. Inside, swaddled in furs untouched by the rain, lay two infants—brothers—eyes glowing faintly with a light no mortal child could bear.

The Vikings who found them whispered of omens, of gods cast down in flesh, of a destiny that would either save the world or drown it in blood.

They believed the brothers were a gift from the gods, sent to one day aid them in battles yet to come. Both boys carried journeys within them, but their paths would not be the same. They could both become great leaders—or only one of them would.

The hardened men—warriors who feared no beast nor blade—fell silent. None dared touch the boys at first. Minutes passed as they stood in silence, until one man finally spoke.

It was Eirik the Bearslayer who broke the stillness. The leader of the tribe, a man who knew what was best for his people, lifted his voice and said:

“I believe the gods have sent us these children to protect our people. We should raise them as our own, and train them until the day they are ready to fight greater battles.”

The tribe murmured their agreement. The warriors bowed their heads. They all knew the truth in their bones—these brothers were meant to lead.

And so it was that Eirik took the boys as his own sons. He named them Xylos and Kaelen—children not of this earth, raised among the Northmen.

Eirik had no sons of his own, only daughters who would one day marry into other clans. But when he looked upon the brothers, something stirred in him—pride, and a duty he thought long gone. He trained them as if they were born of his blood, shaping them into warriors of the tribe.

From their earliest years, the boys outmatched their kin. At six, they lifted axes too heavy for grown men. At ten, they wrestled bears in the woods and returned without a scratch. The tribe marveled, but Eirik only grew wary.

“They are not mine to shape,” he confessed one night to the village seer, a bent old woman who stared too long into the fire.

“No,” she rasped. “They are more than yours. More than ours. When their day comes, they will not fight for land, or for gold, or for tribe. They will fight for the world.”

Eirik said nothing of this to the brothers. He believed it was best they never knew what they truly were. He taught them instead to be men—to be Vikings, not monsters. To hunt and raid as their people did. To bleed with honor.

And yet, in the quiet of the night, when the hall was hushed and the boys slept beneath the rafters, he would watch them, unease in his heart. For though they laughed as brothers, fought as brothers, and lived as brothers—he saw the storm between them growing stronger with each passing year.

Xylos, with his calm eyes and steady hand, bore the weight of leadership as naturally as breath. Kaelen, with his restless fire, bristled in his brother’s shadow. And Eirik—who had carried them from the sea as helpless babes—knew in his bones that one day, they would not stand side by side, but face to face as enemies.

It had always been a possibility.
