Decent shifter tale, with a touch of navigation issues
"For the most part this was a decent story. It's a shifter tale and yet not. The main four characters are long lived, shifters of different sorts, even to each other, and have the indifference that long lived people have...or have been presented as. An almost whatever attitude to other people's activities that only comes when you've seen everything. This starts with the foursome running a boarding school from the background, they handle the school and the security for it in the shadows for the most part, while letting the students form their cliques and groups without much interaction. Until the female lead shows up and is adopted by one of them, then they take an active interest in protecting her and rooting out the bullies from the school. This tale has a tendency to lose it's way with where it was headed occasionally, but rights itself eventually and gets back on track. Think of it like a set up novel for the rest of the story, a prequel if you will...rather than a standalone novel. You wouldn't be able to read anything that comes afterwards without this first novel. The author claims to have an issue with grammar and spelling but I can't say I agree, for the most part the words flowed well, if there are misspellings then they are limited in scope, to the point that it didn't detract from the story in any way. The ending came quicker then expected, I had let this go for a bit to catch up on other stories...then circled back to realize it finished and I needed to review it. The main characters were all set up pretty well by the author, decent backstories to tell the reader who they are, with just enough of an undetermined past that showed up later on to fill in the blanks. I'm not certain the author had this story planned out ahead of time, I say that because it seemed to be set in a path, only to change course and start going in a different direction. If nothing else it kept the reader on their toes. All in all a good first book for what may become a series. The author indicated there would be a follow up novel for one of the secondary characters, that may shed some light on the main characters backstories, or it may not. "
