Chapter 1
The Dinner Table
The sun was sinking behind the houses, the sky glowing orange as laughter spilled across the Mitchells’ backyard.
Anna stood with a bat clutched in her hands, her hair messy from running around. Across from her, Ella held the ball, her lips pressed tight in concentration.
“Ready?” Ella asked, trying to sound serious.
“Always ready!” Anna shot back with a grin.
Ella tossed the ball as hard as her little arms could manage, but crack! Anna smacked it clean across the yard. She threw her hands in the air. “Yes! I won again! You didn’t even win once, Ella!”
Ella stomped her foot. “That’s because you don’t play fair.”
Anna spun in a little circle, still grinning. “Nope. It’s because I’m the champion!”
Before Ella could argue back, their mom’s voice came from the kitchen window. “Girls! Dinner time!”
They dropped everything and bolted toward the house, giggling as they ran inside.

The smell of roast chicken and warm bread filled the dining room. Colonel James Mitchell, still in his sharp army uniform, sat at the head of the table, posture straight and serious, though his eyes softened when they landed on his daughters. Across from him, Dr. Emily Mitchell set down a dish, her hair pulled back after a long shift at the hospital.
Anna slid into her chair, still buzzing from her win. She leaned toward her twin and whispered, “See? Even Dad knows I’m better.”
James raised an eyebrow, amused. “Competition is good,” he said, “but remember, victory without respect doesn’t mean much.”
Emily shook her head with a small smile. “So different, the two of you,” she said. “One runs after books, the other after balls.”
James nodded, his voice thoughtful. “That’s why we should think carefully about their future. Anna… you belong in a sports academy, where your fire can grow. And Ella, you’ll shine in a school that feeds your love for learning.”
Anna’s eyes went wide. “A sports academy? Like real athletes go?”
Her father chuckled. “Yes, little soldier. Work hard, and maybe one day you’ll wear our country’s colors.”
Anna nearly bounced in her seat, her excitement impossible to contain.
Ella stayed quiet for a moment before looking up, her voice soft. “And me, Dad?”
James reached over, brushing her hair back gently. “You, my star, will change the world with your mind.”
Ella’s cheeks turned pink as she smiled shyly. “…I’ll try.”
That night, over a simple family dinner, two very different paths were set in motion, one fueled by fire, the other by thought. And though the girls didn’t know it yet, those paths would one day test not just their bond, but their hearts.
