Chapter 1 – Ellen

June 26, 2015

Dear Ellen,

Don’t trust my brother. I might not make it to our wedding tomorrow, but be patient—I’ll find you.

Love,

Robert

How did this letter end up on my dressing table? This is not funny at all! Such a prank is in terrible taste. Robert was on excellent terms with his brother. And tomorrow is our tenth wedding anniversary—Philippe has been nothing but wonderful to me for the past decade. Why on earth wouldn’t I trust him?

Whoever wrote this letter put a lot of effort into it. Robert’s calligraphy was absolutely top-notch. I haven’t seen such neat handwriting since… well, since Robert’s. I wish I were still with him, but it is what it is. Death parted us before we could vow to each other.

Wait a moment; the letter is dated eleven years ago. A day before the wedding that never happened. Nobody knew that date. Not even Philippe. But Robert couldn’t have written that—he died on June 25th. What is going on?
