Prologue: The Silence

Year: 4065 Location: The Outskirts of Vire Hollow

The world had already begun to whisper.

Hunter was nine. Conner, barely six. Their voices still carried the reckless clarity of childhood—until the day the wind stopped, and the shadows began to listen.

They were playing near the ruins, chasing echoes in the dust, when their mother screamed. Not loud. Not long. But enough.

The air thickened. The birds vanished. The silence became shape.

He came from the trees—tall, robed in stitched shadows, mouth sewn shut with black thread that pulsed like veins. In his hand, the pendulum. It didn’t swing. It hovered, humming with the weight of stolen breath.

Conner froze. Hunter ran.

Their mother knelt, hands raised, whispering apologies to a god that didn’t forgive.

Hunter dropped to his knees beside her. “Please,” he begged, voice cracking into a whisper. “Take me. Not her.”

The Silencer tilted its head. The pendulum twitched.

But it wasn’t mercy. It was choice.

Their mother’s mouth began to stitch itself shut—thread crawling like spiders across her lips. Her eyes locked on Hunter’s, wide with love and terror.

Then the pendulum swung.

And the silence took her.
