The Brilliance Of Everyday Life
Malcom Henrique lived in a minimalist, almost clinical apartment. Every object seemed designed for functionality rather than emotion. And yet, amidst this sanitized setting, a small cracked toy sat on a shelf, silent yet disturbing.
Each morning, Malcom would get up, make his black coffee, and stare out at the city through the bay window. Advertising holograms paraded by without pause: perfect smiles, vibrant slogans, promises of synthetic happiness. And every day, he felt a void deep inside.
That morning, he felt watched. A subtle vibration, almost imperceptible, passed through the cracked toy. Malcom shivered. He had never believed in signs or coincidences… until that day.
First Crack
At the office, everything seemed normal: glowing screens, focused colleagues, endless meetings. And yet, something was off. The numbers scrolled too fast, the emails seemed incomplete, and sometimes, a sentence or word appeared that he didn’t remember writing.
Malcom sat down, gripping the cracked toy in his hand. A blurry image passed through his mind: a child’s laughter, followed by a familiar jingle. He blinked. No one had spoken. And yet… the memory was there, indelible.
“You look troubled,” said his colleague Saffi, smiling.
Malcom shook his head.
“Nothing… just tired.”
But he knew something had begun to seep into his reality. And this was only the beginning.
The Intrusion
Later that day, Malcom received a cryptic message on his professional terminal. No signature, no source. Just a few words:
“What you’re looking for is closer than you think. Trust no one.”
A chill ran down his spine. The cracked toy vibrated slightly in his pocket, as if to confirm the truth of the message.
Malcom knew he had just crossed a first boundary, the one between the world he thought he knew and a realm where his memories and emotions could be manipulated.
He didn’t know it yet, but this intrusion would change his life… and his mind, forever.
The First Session
The next day, Malcom was summoned by Hélène Sey, director of a mysterious program called INCEPTIA. The office was lit by a cold light, the walls bare and undecorated.
“Malcom Henrique,” she began, “please, have a seat.”
He obeyed, heart pounding. She placed a small device on the table.
“We’re going to explore certain memories… and perhaps reveal what you’ve tried to forget.”
Sey’s voice was soft, almost hypnotic. Malcom felt a shiver down his spine. He placed the cracked toy on the table, unaware of its role in what was about to happen.
When the session began, memory fragments appeared on the screen: moments he believed to be real, but slightly altered. Every detail seemed both familiar and deeply alien.
“What you’re seeing isn’t fixed,” Sey explained. “It’s malleable… but revealing.”
Malcom felt the tension rising. The boundary between the real and the false was already beginning to dissolve.
The First Doubt
After the session, Malcom returned home. The cracked toy vibrated once again on the shelf. His childhood memories, his teenage years, his career choices… everything seemed different.
“Is it me who’s changing… or my memories?” he whispered softly.
He opened a drawer and found photographs he vaguely recognized. Yet some faces were blurry, others altered. A feeling of strangeness overwhelmed him, he was no longer sure what truly belonged to his past.
A thought struck him with force:
What if everything he believed about himself had been manipulated from the very beginning?
The cracked toy vibrated again, almost in response to that thought. Malcom understood that the game had just begun. And this time, there would be no going back.
