PENELOPE

A loud slap was the first thing to greet me when I got home from school. It knocked me to the ground, but I ignored the pain, looked at my mother, smiled gently, and slowly stood up.

I reached for her left hand to kiss it as a sign of respect, but she pushed me away, causing my head to hit the table.

I winced.

I felt a liquid trickle down my forehead. I wiped it with my hand, and it was blood. Blood was the liquid trickling down my forehead.

I stared at my mother, whose eyes showed regret, sadness, and anger.

It had been years since my father passed away due to an unexpected accident. My mother blamed me, and ever since, she has never treated me as her child.

It's my father's birthday today.

We went to the park while my mother was at work. We ate different kinds of food and played at the park.

I dropped my ball, and it rolled onto the road. I ran to get it. I didn't expect a car to be coming.

I saw my father scream and quickly run. I closed my eyes because of the fear that was enveloping me.

I couldn't move.

I opened my eyes and saw my father. He was lying on the ground, smiling at me. He was covered in blood.

He saved me, but it cost him his life.

He whispered to me and said, "I love you, Penelope." Those were his last words before he passed away.

A deafening sound echoed from the monitor. My mother's eyes showed her worry before doctors and nurses started to arrive one after another. Before I got one last look at my mother and closed my eyes.
