Chapter 1

A SWIPE OF FATE

Cindy never imagined that her love story would begin with a dating app. To her, love had always been a matter of fate, something that blossomed naturally in unexpected places. She believed it should arise by chance—a smile exchanged with a stranger in church, a kind word from a neighbor’s son, or a meaningful conversation at a family wedding. The kind of love that didn’t need algorithms, filters, or a curated profile. It was the sort of love that found you when you least expected it, and Cindy had always thought that if it wasn’t real, it wasn’t worth her time.

Dating apps, in her mind, were crowded rooms of pretense. Profiles filled with staged smiles, flashy photos, and carefully crafted bios. People seemed to project not who they were, but who they wished to be—or who they thought others wanted them to be. Real love, she thought, could not be found there. It was too mechanical, too transactional. How could someone type a few words about themselves and hope that another person would understand the complexities of their heart, their dreams, their fears? Cindy had dismissed it all with quiet disdain… until loneliness crept in like an uninvited guest.

Loneliness is a strange companion. That evening, it sat with her like a shadow, thick and heavy, filling her apartment with its silent weight. The walls of her small living room seemed to close in, the soft hum of the refrigerator louder than it should have been. Her phone rested on the table beside her, lighting up occasionally with notifications that brought no joy. She picked it up restlessly, tapping aimlessly at the screen, scrolling through social media feeds, and reading messages that seemed to have no substance. Still, she felt an ache in her chest—a yearning for connection, for someone who could see her, really see her.

Curiosity, mixed with that aching loneliness, finally overpowered her skepticism. She opened the app her friend Docars had encouraged her to try weeks ago. “Just swipe a little,” Docars had said. “You’ll see, Cindy. There’s someone out there for you.” Cindy had laughed, half-heartedly. She hadn’t believed her, but tonight, with nothing else to do and silence pressing in, she swiped. Left. Left again. Left. Each profile blurred into the next: a man smiling too broadly, a background too perfect, a bio too rehearsed. Her fingers grew tired. She almost closed the app, but then, she stopped.

His name was Marcus.

There was nothing extraordinary about the photo. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t staged. There were no designer clothes or exotic backgrounds. But something about him was different. His smile was warm, mischievous, yet gentle. His eyes—Cindy could feel it even through a screen—carried depth, kindness, and an inexplicable magnetism. For a moment, she just stared, her heart betraying her initial resistance. She felt a strange flutter, a tug she didn’t understand but instinctively trusted. Against her instincts, she swiped right.

That single swipe changed everything.

The Beginning

Marcus’s first message was unlike any she had received before. Polite, funny, magnetic. It didn’t feel forced or calculated. He didn’t flatter her excessively, and yet his words made her laugh in ways she hadn’t in years. There was a rhythm to their conversation, a natural flow, as though they had always known each other. They talked about music, movies, dreams, small victories at work, and the odd frustrations of daily life. Cindy found herself opening her phone just to see if he had messaged. Their chats became her escape from the dull routines of life, the only bright moments in otherwise quiet evenings. Within days, they moved their conversations to WhatsApp, a more private space where emojis, voice notes, and long paragraphs became bridges between their hearts.

Nights blurred into dawns. Cindy would check her phone repeatedly, even in the middle of her workday, replaying his voice notes, laughing at his jokes, cherishing the little glimpses of warmth he sent through the screen. There was a comfort in his words, a presence she could almost feel even when he wasn’t there. She started imagining a life where their chats weren’t just digital, where smiles weren’t captured in a tiny screen, but shared in the sunlight, in crowded streets, and in the quiet corners of cafés.

From the start, Marcus wrapped Cindy in carefully placed lies, small yet persistent enough to keep her heart tethered. “My mom sends her love,” he would say casually, as if it were true. “She can’t wait to meet you.”

.” Each repetition felt like a mantra, a reassurance that she was loved, wanted, and welcomed even before the real meeting. She held onto it, imagining introductions, family gatherings, and the warmth of a mother’s approval.

Months later, the truth emerged like a cruel wind: Marcus’s mother did not even know Cindy existed. Every “my mom says hi,” every carefully positioned promise, every hint of approval had been a manipulation designed to keep her attached, to make her feel special while pulling her deeper into his world. Cindy’s heart ached as she realized the extent of the deception—not in the moment of meeting him, but in every late-night whisper, every laugh shared in the quiet dark. He had played her carefully, threading words that felt like love into a trap that would eventually tighten.

Expanding the Emotional Landscape

Cindy’s mind often wandered back to that first message. She remembered the warmth it carried, the subtle humor, the unexpected sincerity. She had felt seen, understood, and for a fleeting moment, her guarded heart had allowed itself to hope. She would lie awake, replaying his words, wondering if maybe, just maybe, the universe had bent in her favor.

Yet, alongside the warmth, there was a flicker of unease she couldn’t quite shake. Sometimes, a gut feeling whispered that something was off, but each time, Marcus’s charm and careful reassurances soothed the unease. “Don’t worry, Cindy,” he would write, “I’m here. You’re safe. We’re together, always.” And she wanted so desperately to believe him that she quieted the whisper inside herself, pushing doubts into the back of her mind.

Even Docars noticed the change. “Cindy, slow down. You don’t even know him yet. People aren’t always what they seem online.” But Cindy smiled, half-heartedly, “I know him, Docars. I feel it.” And that feeling—the warmth, the excitement, the tiny flutter in her chest—was enough to keep her reaching for her phone every night, waiting for the next message that would make her heart skip again.
