Charlotte had been keeping a close eye on Adam over the past couple of weeks, ever since the horrific night of the fire at the Cunningham summer home.

But each time that she came into his room to check on him, Adam remained in the same position, seated on the edge of the bed and staring off in a daze.

She was beginning to become worried for him.

Sure, he had been dealt a devastating loss, but this simply couldn’t continue.

He needed to do things like eat and drink and eventually go about his life.

She decided to bring him up some of his favourite fruit as a snack, hoping that he might be a little peckish and try some.

Knocking on the door, she waited for a moment before she called out.

“Adam, dear… it’s me. I’ve just come to check in on you.” she declared.

“Can I come in?”

When she didn’t hear anything back from him she reached out and grabbed the handle, turning it and opening the door.

And just as expected, there he was, in the same position and with that same dazed stare straight ahead.

He hadn’t moved.

She sighed.

Entering the room, she made her way over towards where he sat and placed the plate of fruit onto the bedside table as she then sat down beside him on the edge of the bed.

She didn’t know what she could possibly say to make him feel any better.

Adam was heartbroken.

But she wanted to be there for her son during such a difficult time.

“I brought you some pineapple. I know how much you love pineapple and thought you might be hungry…” she announced with a smile.

No reaction whatsoever.

She thought for a moment.

“Why don’t you try and get some sleep, sweetheart? You’ve been through a lot and… well, you should rest.” she urged him.

“You’re the Managing Director of the company now. You need to look after yourself in order to look after the company. It’s important that you rest and recuperate.

Adam didn’t move or make a sound.

She furrowed her brows and sighed with defeat.

But then he spoke.

His voice was barely a whisper and so timid that she had to strain to hear his words.

“I did this to her…” he proclaimed.

Charlotte wasn’t following, “You did what to whom?”

“I’m the reason she’s dead.” Adam replied.

Charlotte frowned at his comment, outright disagreeing with it one hundred percent.

“You most certainly are not!” she declared.

“How could you say that? You loved Scarlett conditionally-”

“-And look where that got her.” he cut in sternly, turning to face her.

“Do you know the worst part in all this?”

Charlotte looked to him, waiting for his answer.

“He’ll get away with it too...” Adam announced.

“And I couldn’t even give her a funeral; he took away her body that night… why did he take her away? Why did he do that?”

He lowered his head and began sobbing again and Charlotte sighed, placing her hand onto his shoulder, running her thumb up and down over it.

“I know you loved her very much, sweetheart. And I can’t even begin to imagine what you’re going through right now, but we will get through this. I promise.” she tried reassuring him.

“And your father and I are always here for you. We’ll be with you every step of the way, ok?”

Adam then turned and fell into his mother’s open arms, allowing her to wrap them around him and hold him tightly as she consoled him in silence.

Scarlett had cried herself off to sleep on the night that she had learned about Adam's supposed death, not even bothering to climb up into the bed as she slept on the carpeted floor.

Dimitri had gutted her in the most awful way imaginable.

And to make things worse, that was only the beginning of her torment.

As the next couple of weeks went by in a blur for Scarlett, she eventually adjusted to her new life there in Dimitri’s beach side mansion.

It was her home now.

And all thoughts of escaping had died, along with the love of her life.

Also, with each day that passed by, Dimitri pushed the boundaries more and more in an attempt to reconcile things between them and to rekindle their relationship.

Much to Scarlett’s distaste.

She was still in mourning, but it didn’t matter to Dimitri.

He had obvious wants and needs, and as his wife, it seemed that Scarlett was the only one who could accommodate them.

Even though he could have just hired his own prostitutes or escorts to fool around with, he preferred her over any of them.

Perhaps it was the concept of the forbidden fruit.

Each night he would come visit Scarlett in her room with the expectation that she would give herself to him.

And most nights, she outright refused his advances, telling him to leave.

But every now and then, there would be those nights were Dimitri grew tired of being refused by her, and things would turn sour rather quickly.

And unfortunately for Scarlett, this would be one of those nights.

She had just finished showering and changed into her nightgown with hopes of getting an early night’s rest.

Stepping out of the ensuite, she flicked off the light and padded out onto the carpeted floor headed for the bed when a sudden voice startled her, causing her to jump and spin around.

“It’s early…”

Scarlett spotted Dimitri seated on one of the armchairs in the shadowed corner of the room.

“Don’t tell me you’re going to bed already. The night’s barely even begun.” he added.

Scarlett took a steadying breath in.

“Why are you here?” she questioned him.

“I came to see my wife…” Dimitri proclaimed as he then moved to stand up from his seated position and stepping into the dim lighting of the bedroom.

“Is that so unusual A husband coming to see his wife?”

After losing Adam, Scarlett gave up on the idea of trying to convince Dimitri that they weren’t really married, and that the wedding ceremony was totally immoral, not to mention illegal.

But Dimitri had taken this as her agreeing with their marriage, and he was enjoying playing the husband role with her.

It was all a sick and twisted game with Dimitri Mancini.

One that Scarlett had played so many times that she was getting used to it by now.

“I’m going to sleep. If you don’t mind-” Scarlett began, but Dimitri cut in as he began slowly approaching her.

“-Actually, you’re not. You’re my wife, and as such you have some marital duties to fulfil.” he declared.

“Marital duties? What the hell are you even talking about?” she challenged frowning.

“Get on the bed, Scarlett. Don’t make this any harder than it needs to be.” Dimitri ordered her with a stern tone to his voice as he removed his tie from around his neck and tossed it onto the floor.

And upon seeing this Scarlett immediately became enraged.

“You had the man I love killed, Dimitri.” she pointed out.

“Not just killed… burned to death. What in the world makes you think I’d ever want to have sex with you? And yet here you are, putting the moves on me as if nothing happened-”

“-That was weeks ago, Scarlett- ” he argued calmly.

“-So, what, I’m just supposed to forget all about it and move on. Live a happy life with you as your adoring wife and have sex with you every single night? Is that it?” Scarlett challenged him sarcastically.

“Actually, yes. That would be perfect.” he mused.

But Scarlett was not in the mood for playing his twisted games.

“Dream on, asshole.” she snapped, turning away from him and folding her arms over her chest in anger.

And this was the tipping point for Dimitri.

With yet another refusal and the outright disrespect she was now showing him, he suddenly lost it.
