Summary

When she thought that finally she had found happiness, someone from Trudy’s past comes and snatches the happiness from her. She then leads a nightmarish life which she couldn't bear anymore. “That you haven’t been and are still not well I know Trudy. What I don’t know is what ails you. Maybe you can start by explaining to me your sickness. For months now, I have been persuading you to tell me what the problem is, but you refused to open up. Trying to make you tell me your ‘secret’ was like trying to push a dead horse up the hill. Now that you took the initiative, I’m waiting to hear the whole truth.” 'I have to make up a story; Kuda is insisting that I have a secret. I can’t tell him the secret now, it’s too late. How I wish I had listened to my parents and told him the truth before marriage. Now I’m paying the price of airbrushing the scandal of my past.'

Chapter 1

“Honey, come and see what I have for you,” Kuda called to his wife Trudy who was seated at the dressing table flipping through a fashion magazine. Kuda was lying on their king-size hotel bed.

“What is it Kuda? I know you just want me to come to the bed,” Trudy replied with a flirtatious smile, her heart doing flip-flops with joy.

“Yes, I want you over here, close to me like always. And this is the time I have to do that. Come on Darling, come closer.” Both Kuda and Trudy had an insatiable appetite for each other. As for Kuda, his love for Trudy had no other desire but to fulfil itself, and he set about proving it.

Trudy walked towards the bed with the grace of a tiger and snuggled close to him and said, “Show me what you have for me Babe.” Kuda told her to close her eyes. He slipped a string of pure pearls around her neck.

“Open your eyes and look at yourself in the mirror. It’s just as I thought it would look on your slim, shapely neck.” Trudy went to the framed mirror on the wall. She gasped at the sight of the beautiful necklace. She went back to Kuda who was all smiles and hugged him tightly, thanking him profusely for the gift.

“Kuda, you are so generous, I don’t know what to say, only God knows how thankful I’m for your love and generosity.”

“This is nothing Trudy; I will give you anything that money can buy because I love you so much”, said the romantic Kuda.

From the time they were married, Kuda had been lavishing jewels and luxuries of all kinds on her. He played sensual music and they were lost in their love for each other. Kuda Chiheya had taste and style. He also meant every word when he said he would give Trudy anything that money can buy.

Trudy was so happy it was scary. Scary because it reminded her of a time that she was this happy only for the happiness to be cruelly snatched from her. I need to put a lid on this unpleasant negative thinking. Like Job in the Bible I might invite misfortune in my life. After this reasoning, she felt happy without restraint or fear.

Kuda and Trudy were on holiday in Mauritius and were staying at InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava. This was their last day on the island. They had days of uninterrupted pleasure, delving at the heart of the throbbing island. At every turn there was a treasure trove of wonders to discover, interest and intrigue. They went on shopping sprees at malls brimming with beautiful boutiques guaranteed to tempt even the most tight-fisted tourist. All the places they visited were breathtakingly beautiful and interesting. They also tasted a variety of the island’s excellent food, such a curries, seafood, delicious staples and desserts. Afternoons were spent soaking and drinking in the mesmeric beauty of the sights and sounds of the beautiful island. Kuda made sure that this particular holiday was memorable by ensuring supreme levels of comfort and luxury, treating Trudy like royalty in every respect. He wanted it to be a-never-to-be-forgotten memory that would eclipse the highest highlight of their lives.

In Africa, Mauritius is ranked high amongst tourist destinations. Its sapphire blue waters and powder white beaches accompanied by views of the Indian Ocean are breathtaking. In Balaclava where they were staying, the streets glittered at night with myriad dancing lights which flashed in a kaleidoscope of colours and shapes.

Every year Kuda made sure that they had a memorable holiday all by themselves. Sometimes they went to local resorts such as Victoria Falls, Great Zimbabwe and Inyanga. The previous year they had gone to Paris. Kuda loved Paris and had been there several times for work. He never told Trudy where they would be going, he wanted and enjoyed to see the surprise on her face when they were boarding the plane.

Kuda was a water engineer with UNICEF and also owned a consultancy company. Trudy was a legal secretary at Maguire Fitzpatrick and Partners. He earned a very good salary with lots of perks including annual paid holidays. On the other hand, his business brought in very good money. Trudy brought in a moderate salary which Kuda said she could do as she wished with it.
