Prelude: The Smothered Flame

Not all stories can start with a spark of life. Some stories may only began once the flame has been smothered, and a tragic death has occured.

It was a rainy night, and only a small fire lit up the broken down house. Darkness filled the corners of the room, but the flickering flame was enough to provide some light. A man by the name of Isaac was hunched over in front of a fireplace. His head hung towards the floor as he let out terrible bloody screams. He looked down to the pale face below, as he held his deceased son in his arms. Tears began to run down his face, as he screamed wishing this was not real. He was a father that used to be filled with so much hope, but now he had lost everything.

As the flame began to flicker out, the room grew dark and the father quiet. It was only once the flame was gone, that Isaac went completely silent. Hours of time went by with only darkness and stillness in the room.

Lightning flashed outside the window, lighting up the house in random moments. Isaac suddenly swung his head up and laid his son on the wooden floor. He stood up and quickly exited the house into the pouring rain. He returned only a few minutes later holding a bag of materials. He had hysteria in his now red eyes, as he cleared a space on the floor. Isaac grabbed a piece of chalk from his bag and began to draw symbols. He drew them in lines to make up a larger pattern across the ground. This pattern was the constellation of death.

Isaac was an experienced alchemist, and knew that what he was about to do, could easily kill him. But in this moment he was desperate to bring his son back. Even if it meant that he would have to sacrifice himself in the process.

When he finished drawing the constellation, he quickly picked up his son and placed him in the middle of the pattern. He stepped back and slit a cut in his hand letting blood pool in his palm. He squeezed his hand dropping three drops onto the floor. Once the third drop hit the ground, a bright purple light filled the room. Everything in the house began to shake causing parts of the roof to cave in. This caused Isaac to fall backwards and cover his eyes. Soon after the house fell back to darkness and silence.

He sat waiting for what was next.

But the only thing that followed was the sounds of a crying baby.
