Chapter 1 - Death Hurts

Carpathia, The Islands of Roosevelt

Standing frozen to my spot, watching their eyes glare as they stand before me. The sky slowly darkening, sending a chill down my spine. Then I see him. Standing with his head bowed, trying not to look at me. As I watch his face, the betrayal hits me like a bullet to the heart, sending a sick feeling to my stomach. I know now what will happen next. They are going to kill me. I’m going to die because I’m different.

I watch them all now, especially him. This time he looks at me, his face washed of emotion. Blank. Suddenly he lurches to the side as if he is a puppet on strings, and the head of the Plurimi steps forward. I watch only the head of the Plurimi now, a man by the name of Brian. My gaze slowly drops to his right hand, in which he is holding a glittering silver gun. As if in slow motion, he raises the gun and aims it at my chest. My Heart. “This is what happens to magical people who infiltrate Council City, they die,” he says smiling. And with that, he pulls the trigger.

I watch the bullet sail towards me, straight towards my heart. As the bullet enters me, I fall to the ground, blood seeping out of my chest. I go blank as the shock hits me, taking control of my body. In the distance, I hear someone crying as they touch my wounded body. My head falls to the side as my vision starts drifts in and out of focus and I see that the Plurimi has left. I hear crying again, this time quieter than before.

Using as much strength as my body will let me, I lift my head off the ground, and I see a male crouching over me. I use my elbows to prop myself up so I can get a better look at him. Then I realise who it is. It’s him. Alan Cole Hennasea. He turns to look at me, tears sparkling as they roll down his washed-out cheeks. He opens his mouth to say something, but I stop him in his tracks. “I thought you loved me,” I whisper as I look into his misty green eyes, sending me into a hallucination of flashbacks about us. Flashbacks of us play fighting as kids, hanging out together in the courtyard, hunting demons together, baking, going swimming, sharing secrets, kissing., and worst of all, him proposing. All of these make me rethink our whole relationship. I suddenly realise that it was all an act, just so Alan could get my place on the council. I snap out of the hallucinations and watch Alan.

Again, he opens his mouth and this time, I let him say what he has to say. “I do,” he murmurs. “Well as you can see, you’re too late, so just leave so I can suffer in peace, oh wait, scratch that, what I meant to say was that I suggest that you leave now, so you can get a head start because I will come back and I will get you,” I growl as I lower myself back onto the ground. For a minute he just sits there, opening and closing his mouth as if he is trying to catch flies. Then slowly, he gets up and walks away, tears streaming down his terrified face. As I watch him enter the city grounds, a single tear slides down my cheek. “This is what it feels like to have your heart broken,” I whisper to myself.

I’m still alive. But only just. I’m cold, clammy and very sore. My body has entered hypovolemia shock because of my major loss of blood, and I am slowly drifting in and out of consciousness. It’s dark. Very dark. I’m not sure what time it is but it’s definitely late. My body is numb from lying still for so long, slowly dying.

Suddenly, just as I’m drifting out of consciousness again, a loud noise brings me back, followed by the sound of footsteps. As my eyes focus, I see two figures approaching me. When they reach me, they glance at each other and then kneel down beside me, one on each side. Now I can see them clearly. To my left is a man and to my right is a woman. Both look to be in their late 20′s. Even in the darkness, I could see their striking features. The man with his large, muscular build, fair skin, freckles and orange hair. And the woman with her petite but delicate build, olive skin, freckles and long brown hair. I watch them, mesmerised by their beauty. Then, slowly and hesitantly they incline their heads towards my neck. And before I figure out what they are going to do, they bite me, sinking their teeth deep into my neck. I scream. And then the world goes black.
