Chapter 1
“I will miss you, emerald” she said as she handed me the divorce papers, I blankly stare at those meaningless sheets waving Infront of me, “And don’t even think about taking the kids, the kids come with me. And that’s final.” She grabs the kid’s hand and drags him away, I scream “let the random kid go!” “Random kid?!” she gasps “he looks like a random kid to you huh?? He’s our child em, ours, we watched him grow how could you say that?.. this is exactly why I’m leaving you” she wipes away her tears “ha I always knew you were good at acting” I said looking at her amused by her skills, smiling “acting?! This looks like acting to you?? I spent my whole life living up to your expectations and what do you give in return? You cheat on me?” “I didn’t know looking was consider cheating” “I was standing right there literally Infront of you and you had the audacity to look at… that thing...” she said wiping her tears, I respond “that thing?? Mind your language ruby, she is just my friend... and also a very close one...”
“Oh, close huh? How close is that ‘friend of yours’” she asked
“Listen ruby she just a friend like you are to me”
“So, you have decided that I’m just your friend huh?”
“No no no, I’m sorry I meant to say best friend really, she isn’t a best friend but you are, you are my closest friend and ill never cheat on you”
“You promise?”
“I promise”
“So, are you gonna throw away those papers or not?” I ask as I hug her, tears staining my shirt as I signaled our neighbors son who ruby ‘adopted’ who’s like 6 years old and doesn’t know what’s happening to run away from here before she notices and he does so
“No!, it was really hard for me to write 4 whole pages of the divorce papers, you know I was gonna copy down the whole 15 pages of the divorce paper I found in my moms drawer but it was too long and I was too mad at you”
she said as tears flow down like a waterfall, I tried to wipe them as much as I can but she keeps on crying. Ruby was into acting and in very sensitive, like I just looked at stella a little different and ruby got really sad because she thought that I’m gonna leave her and make stella my bff, which is obviously not it. I like ruby she’s smart, sweet and, very nice but I only see her as a friend, no no no a best friend but stella she’s very pretty and she likes rock music, she’s also weirdly very good at making impressions of mickey mouse. “Anyways I better get going, moms gonna start panicking if she finds out I’m not sleeping in my bed” she waves and turns around “see you at school I guess” I say “ok!” she says without turning back.
Well, I should get going too it already pretty late.
I reach home from the park and walk in to my dad watching the news with a beer in his arms, he didn’t even notice I came in, I go to the kitchen searching for my mom but for some reason I can’t seem to find her “mom!” “Mom! Where are you?” I yell in search of her, I her some kind of groans from my parent’s bed room so I yell “mom! You in there?” “SHUT THE FUCK UP IN TRYING TO WATCH SOMETHING!” my dad yells from the hall which scares me but kinda got used to it now which is weird because it wasn’t always like this… again I turn back and try to go back in the room where I heard that weird noise but at that time iris comes home from who knows where but still I go to her and hug her legs saying
“Irissss where have u been I was waiting all day”
“Where I go and don’t, doesn’t matter to you jade your like 9” “soooooo?????????? Your still my sister I have to protect you, that’s my job and also IM 9 AND A HALF”
“Okok chill, now let’s go make some cookies to calm down, shall we?”
“YAY LET’S GO”
We both make our way past my dad without him noticing and went to the kitchen, I went to moms drawer and took out her double chocolate chip cookie recipe and hand it to iris, she opened it dramatically like opening a letter from the king, I giggle at her unseriousness and she giggles with me, but throughout our cooking I keep hearing that weird noise from that room but it doesn’t seem like iris can hear them so I ignore it but still I feel a bit unsettled by this. She read the recipe out loud so I could hear it too, after reading it she took a bowl and put way too much flour in it but she doesn’t seem to care so I just laugh.
After a long time of giggles and blowing flour into each other’s face we finally finished making the dough and placing it on the tray now all we got to do is to put it the oven, iris takes the tray but then remembers the mittens, she looks around but she couldn’t find the pair we always have then I remember the extra pair of mittens I bought for my mom for her last birthday out of my pocket money so I say “ahh there is a extra a pair of mittens in mom and dads room let me go get it” and run towards their room “ JADE DON’T-“ I ignore her and open the door handle as my sister tries to pull me away but.. it was too late. The second I opened the door I regretted every second of it, I regretted every inch of the unpalatable view I saw, haunting me ever since, wishing i never witnessed the scene…
