Chapter 1: The Devil in the Rain
AMIRA’S POV
It was raining excessively. The kind of rain that drowns sound and blurs vision. I tightened my veil, which kept slipping in the wind, and adjusted the umbrella with one hand. It wasn’t very pleasant. Holding the umbrella, fixing the veil, trying to stay composed.
Only Baba and I were there. The mosque was quiet, the last prayer long finished. We were locking up when it happened.
The scream tore through the night like a blade. Raw. Desperate. Not human, not animal—something in between. My blood froze.
Through the sheets of rain, we saw him. Crawling. A silhouette dragging itself across the mud, leaving behind a trail of crimson. I almost dropped the umbrella. My breath caught. My heart thundered.
“Ya Allah,” Baba whispered, already running toward him.
I followed, shielding them both with the umbrella as best I could. The man collapsed with a thud that echoed in my bones.
He was barely alive. Bullet wounds. Knife slashes. Whoever did this wanted him erased. His clothes were expensive, but torn to ribbons. Even unconscious, he radiated danger—like a sleeping wolf, beautiful and lethal.
“Baba, we should call the police,” I said, my voice trembling as I helped drag him inside.
“And let him die while we wait? No, habibti. Allah sent him to us.”
I didn’t argue. I couldn’t. Baba’s faith was unwavering.
But as I looked at the man’s blood-stained hands, the scars etched into his skin like a map of violence, I felt a chill deeper than the rain.
What if Allah wasn’t sending us a soul to save?
What if He was testing us—with something darker than we could bear?
