Chapter 1 : Whisper of a name

The old man had always found the library in his neighborhood intriguing. It seemed to call to him, like a lost voice finally finding its way. At last, he decided he would go inside, even though books had never really amused him.

When he stepped through the doors, the space felt strangely familiar, as if it were a part of him he had long forgotten. He wandered between the shelves, and the smell of old pages stirred a memory of someone—but he couldn’t remember who.

In a quiet corner, a single chair and desk caught his eye, and he made his way toward them. There, he discovered a drawer with a small lock. In his purse, he found a key whose purpose he did not know. On impulse, he tried it—and to his surprise, the lock clicked open.

Inside lay a letter and a book. The moment his eyes fell on the name Elizabeth, a single tear slipped from the corner of his eye. He opened the letter and saw his own name, Matthew Jones, written at the top. At first, he was confused, but soon he realized it must be from someone who knew him intimately.

The letter read:

> My dearest Matthew,

If you are reading this, then perhaps the library has called you as it called me. I don’t know if you remember me, but I will never forget you.

There were days we shared here that I kept locked in my heart, moments that no time could erase. Even when I am gone, I will be with you—in the quiet corners, in the pages, in the whispers of memory.

I had so many stories left to tell, things I never said aloud, dreams we dreamed together. I hope you find them here, and maybe, in finishing them, you will remember me.

Even if I die, I will always be with you.

Always,

Elizabeth

Matthew held the letter close to his chest, feeling the weight of the words settle deep inside him. The library seemed quieter now, almost as if it were holding its breath. He glanced at the book beside the letter, its cover worn but strangely familiar, and a shiver ran down his spine.

For a long moment, he simply sat there, letting the unexplainable feeling linger. A single tear glistened on his cheek, and his heart tightened in a way he couldn’t name. He didn’t know who Elizabeth was—or why her words affected him—but he sensed that the book held a story meant for him. For now, he simply remained in the quiet corner, letting the mystery of it settle around him.
