Chapter 1
***Caroline Hale has built her reputation on being unshakable. As the brilliant COO of Hale Industries, she’s determined to prove she’s more than her father’s legacy—her career is her everything. The last thing she can afford is distraction.
Enter Jake Reid—self-made tech billionaire and CEO of Reid Tech & Transfers. He’s sharp, ambitious, and infuriatingly charming. When their companies are forced to collaborate on three high-stakes projects, sparks fly in the boardroom as quickly as tempers do.
What begins as rivalry soon twists into an undeniable attraction. Drinks after meetings blur into dangerous territory, but Caroline refuses to risk the empire she’s worked so hard to claim. Jake, however, isn’t used to losing—especially not to a woman who gets under his skin in every possible way.****
Chapter 1
The boardroom hums with quiet tension, the kind that precedes billion-dollar decisions. I sit at the head of the polished oak table, spine straight, gaze unwavering. At twenty-seven, I am the youngest person in the room—and the one everyone watches. The Hale name opened the door, but it’s my own brilliance and hard work that keep me here. I don’t flinch under scrutiny; I thrive on it. Today’s meeting isn’t just another deal. It’s the start of a partnership that could redefine my father’s empire—and the first time I’ll come face to face with Jake Reid.
Jake Reid. CEO of Reid Tech and Transfers. A man I’ve heard so much about—a thirty-year-old prodigy, ruthless in business, yet admired for his vision. His company handles global digital infrastructure, high-security financial transfers… the backbone of future business transactions.
The glass door swings open, drawing every eye. He steps in, tall, muscular, brown hair swept perfectly to one side, infuriating smirk already in place. My pulse ticks up, a warning I don’t ignore. Slowly, I rise, extending my hand.
“Well, well, well. You must be Mrs. Hale,” he says, voice smooth, confident, just slightly teasing. His gaze lingers. I know he’s assessing me, and I don’t bother to hide it—I own my presence in this white pantsuit.
“It’s good to finally put a face to the name, Mr. Reid,” I reply, tilting my chin up, matching his smirk with one of my own. Two can play this game.
“Mrs. Hale,” he repeats, letting the title roll off his tongue as if testing it, “so I take it you run the show here while your father sits back and… enjoys the view?”
I raise an eyebrow, resisting the urge to roll my eyes. “I don’t just run the show, Mr. Reid. I own it. But don’t worry—I’ll try not to overshadow you too much today.”
His smirk widens, a spark of amusement in his eyes. “I like a woman with confidence. Dangerous, though—I usually prefer someone a little… more manageable.”
“Manageable?” I echo, letting the word hang. “I’m afraid that’s never been on my resume.”
He chuckles, the sound low and deliberate, and takes a step closer, his presence filling the room without touching me. “I can tell. But I’m intrigued. Very few can keep up with me in the boardroom—and even fewer out of it.”
I tilt my head, studying him. He’s handsome, yes—but more than that, I sense the same drive, the same fire I carry. I won’t be intimidated, but I also can’t deny the pull. “Then consider this your first test,” I say smoothly. “Impress me, and maybe I’ll let you see what it’s like to keep up.”
His eyes flash with challenge, and just like that, the air between us is charged—electric, competitive, and just a little dangerous. “Oh, Mrs. Hale,” he murmurs, “I do love a good challenge.”
The board members clear their throats, shuffling papers and opening laptops, but the spark between Jake and me lingers, invisible yet undeniable. I slide into my seat, straightening my white pantsuit, and glance around the table. Everyone’s watching us. Typical. Let them.
Jake takes his place opposite me, posture casual but commanding. He leans back, folding his arms, eyes scanning the room as if assessing not just the meeting, but me.
“Shall we begin?” I say smoothly, clicking the remote to display the projected figures on the screen. “I trust you’ve reviewed the preliminary data on the North American expansion?”
“I have,” Jake replies, his voice calm but edged with confidence. “But I think we’re approaching it from… different perspectives.” He tilts his head, that infuriating smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “I like to challenge assumptions. Keeps people on their toes.”
I feel my pulse quicken—not from intimidation, but from the thrill of the match. “Then I hope you’re ready to be on your toes, Mr. Reid. Because I don’t adjust numbers to fit someone else’s ego.”
A ripple of murmurs runs around the boardroom. Good. Let them see the fire.
Jake leans forward slightly, resting his forearms on the table. “Ego? No, Mrs. Hale, this isn’t about ego. It’s about results. And I have a feeling you’re as obsessed with results as I am.”
I allow a small, controlled smile. “Obsessed? Perhaps. But I like to win my way. That usually involves careful planning… and patience.”
“And patience?” His eyebrow quirks, teasing. “I’ve been told that patience isn’t your strongest virtue.”
I catch the subtle flicker of amusement in his gaze, and I can’t help but match it with a pointed one of my own. “Impatience has its uses,” I say. “Especially when the stakes are high.”
He leans back again, crossing his arms, watching me as if analyzing my every reaction. “High stakes, indeed,” he murmurs, just loud enough for me to hear.
The meeting rolls on; figures, forecasts, projections, but beneath the professional chatter, a quiet battle wages between us. Every glance, every measured word is a play of power. Every subtle smirk is a test.
By the time the last slide fades from the screen, I know one thing: Jake Reid isn’t just another CEO. He’s a match for me in every way.
“Very productive session,” I say, standing to signal the end of the meeting. “I think we all have a clear understanding of what’s at stake.”
“Clear,” he agrees, standing as well, his hand brushing briefly against mine as he passes. It’s fleeting, but electric. I resist the urge to linger.
Instead, I nod, cool and composed.
As he walks toward the door, I can’t stop my eyes from following him. The man is infuriating, impossible… and dangerously attractive. And I know, with a thrill I’ll never admit aloud, that this is only the beginning.
