A Gripping, Yet Unsettling, Captive Narrative

The author does a fantastic job of building tension from the very first line; the prologue is particularly strong in establishing a sense of imminent dread. Leonora's voice feels authentic—her fear, confusion, and spark of defiance are palpable. Her attempted escape and the bizarre, almost mocking non-reaction from the guards is a brilliant touch that highlights her powerlessness. The dynamic with the Don is classic dark romance, charged with menace and a forbidden attraction that the protagonist herself is disturbed by. However, the narrative relies heavily on well-known tropes of the genre. The ruthless, impeccably dressed mafia boss and the instant, confusing attraction in the face of grave danger might feel familiar to seasoned readers. While the Italian phrases add atmosphere, their frequent use without immediate translation can be slightly disruptive. Overall, this is a very strong start for fans of dark romance. It promises a story filled with tension, power struggles, and intense passion, though it doesn't shy away from its dark and potentially triggering themes.
