The tunnel
John woke up his head pounding, with a throbbing hammering on his skull he looked around at the space he was in. He appeared to be laying on the floor of a hospital hallway, but there didn’t seem to be anyone around and the lights were dim as he looked down barely able to see his Immaculate three-piece suit.
“That’s weird” John said to himself looking up
“I’m in a hospital but there’s not a mark on me so what am I doing here?” John picked himself up and his legs started to walk down the hallway. After walking for what seemed like hours John saw a glimmer of light at the end. It turned out that at the end of the hallway there was a door with the emergency exit light flickering above it. The flickering light gave the eerie effect of being in a horror movie and John started to feel uneasy quickening his pace, the sounds of his footsteps getting quicker and quicker, louder and louder as he neared the door, neared escape…but escape from what? There didn’t seem to be anyone here. John stopped dead. As he looked behind him John saw that there was indeed no other people or animals or any type of creature behind him, living or dead. So why were the hairs on the back of his neck standing to attention? and why did he have a shiver down his spine whenever he looked at the door, which appeared to be the only way of this floor and out of the hospital in general, John turned and began walking towards the door again. His nerves calmed. Wait…was the door further away than when he last looked? No surly not, he hadn’t moved, so why did the door look so far away?
“I must be imagining it” John told himself as starting to walk again. The, now soft, tap… tap… taping of his feet was the only sound in the hospital. It was deathly quiet without the sounds of monitors, phones, there were no Doctors or nurses busying around doing whatever they usually would be doing. But John pushed this thought to the back of his mind, he just wanted to focus at the task in hand. Getting to the door. John didn’t know why but suddenly the only thing that mattered was that pale white door. Getting to it and getting through it. To whatever lay beyond.
“Wait what did that mean “whatever lay beyond?” and what was this mysterious voice in his head describing everything he did and felt and thought?” But it didn’t matter, all that mattered was getting to the door so run John run to the door get out GET OUT!
John started running, but then stopped and thought to himself
“Why am I trusting this voice in my head? After all it must only be a figment of my imagination due to me walking for so long, or it could be trying to trick be into going through the door where I shall meet my doom, I should probably not listen to it” John started to walk the other way.
“OH, don’t do that john I only want what’s best for you, you see without you I’ll cease to exist and I like being here talking to you it’s fun. If you die I’ll be all alone again please turn back please?” the voice was pleading with John by now but Johns mind was set the voice wanted to do him harm. He started to run, like the voice had told him to do… but away from the door leaving it far behind.
“oh no John I meat it I really do want what’s best for you, and me” the voice then spoke in an explaining but sympathetic sort of way “get out this dream, it’s not a dream at all it’s a nightmare and if you don’t escape it you may never get out of here, alive that is.” John turned and looked at the door again suddenly it seemed too close for comfort and... Wait a second what had the voice said, “you may never get out of here, alive that is” so could John DIE here in a dream?
“Help me help me” he cried out to the voice then stopped suddenly and ran away from the door mumbling “won’t get out alive won’t get out alive!” the voice suddenly became more threatening.
“not if I have anything to do with it anyway look around you John, what did you see running back where to you started? didn’t you realise this is just one long corridor its never-ending John, you’ll never escape now, going through that door was your only option but still, run anyway see if I care I’m just a figment of your imagination remember John so obviously you don’t need my help so I’m going to leave you to it have fun! And with that the voice vanished.
“Oh, please wait” pleaded John
“Please help me get out of this terrible Dream” he begged and he collapsed onto the cold floor rocking like an insane person within an asylum …. and the voice replied
“It is no dream this is a nightmare”
“The only way out is through the door” thought John he put his hand to the cold, metallic surface pushed himself off the floor the door was open at the end of the hallway. And john ran for it. He ran for hour getting further towards the end of the hallway painfully slowly… but he WAS making it. At last John reached the open door and was greeted with a bright white light engulfing the frame making it impossible to see beyond. John walked through, and fell, and fell, and fell… then the world went black.
Chapter 2
“John. JOHN!” shouted victor in turmoil. John had been out for days when Emily had tried to connect with him she had been pushed out by a mind that wasn’t Johns another voice trying to get him killed, only his mind had kept resetting every time he hit the edge of death but it couldn’t do that forever.
Emily knelt besides john and tried to connect again while the others wove their spells around keeping johns brain alive. This time there was no other voice just her and john.
“John? Are you there?”
“Whose there?” answered the voice of her friend
“John it’s me, it’s Emily your unconscious I’m going to set up an escape route follow the sound of my voice”
John turned around and was met by a grey light briefly bling him, as his sight returned he saw a figure bathed in a sea green robe of light looking at him. Her features seemed familiar but strange, as he came closer he realised that they were Emily’s face on a different body.
“come home to us” the figure said extending a soft, delicate hand to him.
John took the hand and stood up and stared at the beautiful lady hovering before him.John smiled at her as the unseen fingers clutched around his waist and pulled him into the darkness forever. The last words Emily heard were
“Thank you”
John woke in a dimly lit hallway he looked around himself at his surroundings
“That’s funny” John said to himself
“I’m in a hospital but don’t have a mark on me so what am I doing here?” John picked himself up and began to walk down the hallway there was a door at the end of it…..
