🌙 Chapter 1 – The Return
Kaia’s POV
The forest breathed against me, heavy with mist and the taste of old magic.
It had been years since I left Lunaris, but tonight it felt less like homecoming and more like trespassing.
My horse shied at a rustle in the underbrush, ears flicking. I muttered to myself, “Welcome home, Kaia. You really picked the scenic route to chaos.”
A shadow of memory followed me with every step. The echo of a slammed door. The weight of angry words that still clung to my bones.
I had run from this place like it was a cage. And yet… here I was — drawn back by threads I couldn’t sever, threads that still whispered my name through the bond.
I could still feel the pack bond, but something was deeply wrong with it. Wolves around me shifted awkwardly, growls rattling their throats. Their scents were off — muddled, fragmented — as if the invisible threads that tied us together had been severed or twisted so badly they no longer knew how to speak to each other.
The ridge ahead sharpened in the fading light. And there he was — Lucien Vale, Alpha of the Obsidian Moon Pack, rigid as carved stone.
I felt him before I saw him: the subtle pressure in the bond, the way wolves around me stiffened. His ice-grey eyes swept my territory with the calm, infuriating precision of an enemy — or a predator.
“Funny, Lucien. My pack looks broken, and you’re standing right on the fault line. Coincidence?” I said as I passed him, unable to stop my tongue.
He didn’t flinch. “Or maybe you’ve forgotten how heavy a crown is.”
His voice was low. Controlled.
I clenched my jaw. And that would be me... Supposedly.
A sudden snarl from below the ridge interrupted my thoughts.
Fur burst through skin, bones cracked as two Lunaris wolves tore at each other — too fast, too unstable — their forms flickering between human and wolf.
The air reeked of iron and ozone, each snarl scraping raw against my nerves.
“Kaia! Don’t just stand there, genius!” Lio’s voice cut through the commotion.
Instinct pulled me down the ridge before thought could.
I rolled under a snapping jaw, forcing one wolf back with a sharp command. “Enough!”
The word cracked like thunder and, for a heartbeat, they froze. Recognition flickered in their eyes — pack recognizing pack.
My heart slammed against my ribs. Even after years away, the bond still answered me.
Although… not completely.
Lucien’s POV
She moved as if the pack still belonged to her — as if years of absence were nothing but a breath between heartbeats.
Dangerous. Too dangerous to ignore.
My second shifted beside me, restless. “Why do you watch her?” he murmured.
I ignored him.
I hadn’t decided if she was a threat… or an opportunity.
Kaia’s POV
I climbed back to the ridge, breath sharp in my chest.
Below me, Lunaris staggered into uneasy silence. Their eyes followed me — not all friendly, not all forgiving.
Whispers carried in the air:
“She doesn’t belong here.”
“The Alpha’s runaway returns.”
Lucien’s gaze locked with mine across the clearing — calm, calculating, dangerous.
My pack might tear itself apart under his stare alone.
From the treeline, a rustle stirred. Not prey. Not scouts. Something colder.
The bond inside me spasmed, jagged threads clawing against my ribs.
Elder Thane’s warning whispered through memory, his voice cracked with age:
“This pack cannot survive fractured. Only you can restore it, Kaia. Only you.”
My throat tightened.
Only me… against this?
The moon lifted, silver threads bleeding across the clearing.
For a breath, the bond surged — then snapped so violently my knees almost buckled.
A lone howl tore through the clearing, jagged and wrong.
Not harmony. Not unity. A warning.
My homecoming was already unravelling —
and the moon, pale and merciless, watched in silence.
