Chapter 1 – Scars That Remain

The rain fell mercilessly that night, washing over the empty streets. Streetlights glowed dimly through the frosted glass of her apartment window, flickering shadows against cold walls. Evelyn sat on the floor, her back weakly pressed against the wall, eyes fixed on the half-filled wine glass in her hand.

The sharp scent of alcohol clung to the air, but it wasn’t strong enough to drown the pain eating her alive.

Her life had collapsed in an instant—so sudden she hadn’t even had time to breathe. The tragedy that swallowed her months ago still bled, raw and unhealed. People always said time would mend wounds, but for Evelyn, time only deepened the hollow ache inside her chest.

Her hand trembled as she lifted the glass, staring at the crimson liquid as though it were an abyss waiting to claim her. For a fleeting second, she thought of how easy it would be to surrender. To close her eyes forever. To stop feeling.

But then—

“Is that really how you want to die? Pathetic and alone, with a glass in your hand?”

The voice shattered the silence.

Evelyn flinched, her eyes widening at the figure standing in the doorway. A man—tall, broad-shouldered, dressed immaculately in a black suit that somehow looked untouched despite the rain still dripping from his shoulders. His hair was damp, his face too perfectly carved to be real: a sharp jawline, high-bridged nose, and eyes as dark as obsidian, piercing straight through her.

“Who… who are you?” Her voice shook, caught between fear and defiance.

The man stepped forward, calm, unhurried, as if he was already in control of the room. Without asking, he plucked the wine glass from her trembling hand and set it aside with chilling precision.

“Leandro Soren Ezekiel,” he said simply.

“I’m a psychologist. And you, Evelyn Seraphina Vance, are standing on the wrong edge of the cliff.”

Her breath caught. How did he know her name—her full name? The words she wanted to speak tangled uselessly in her throat. There was something about him—his presence pressed against her like invisible weight.

Leandro crouched in front of her, locking his eyes with hers. He smiled faintly—not warmly, but with the kind of smile that made her heartbeat trip.

“Listen to me, Evelyn. You don’t want to die. You only want the pain to stop. And those are not the same thing.”

Tears finally slipped down her cheeks. She buried her face in her hands, her body shaking. He didn’t touch her, but his presence alone felt like an anchor, keeping her from shattering completely.

“I can’t… I can’t do this anymore,” she whispered.

His voice dropped lower, deep and hypnotic. “Yes, you can. You just need a reason. And I can be that reason.”

The words sliced through her, terrifying yet strangely… comforting. She looked at him, unsure if she had met her savior—or her prison.

“Why?” Her voice cracked. “Why do you even care about me?”

That faint, dangerous smile deepened. “Because from tonight onward, you belong to me, Evelyn.”

Her heart skipped a beat. His words weren’t a suggestion. They were a verdict.

He draped his coat over her shoulders, heavy and warm. “Sleep. Tomorrow, you’ll come to see me. Every week. I’ll teach you how to live again.”

There was no room for refusal in his tone. Logic screamed for her to fight, but her fragile heart clung to the safety he offered.

That night, as the door closed behind him, Evelyn knew: her life had just changed forever. Whether it was salvation or a deeper kind of ruin, she couldn’t tell.

---

The next morning felt strange. Evelyn woke on the sofa, wrapped in the heavy black coat that still carried his scent—cedar, spice, and something darker. Proof that last night hadn’t been a dream. The faint rainwater stains on the wooden floor confirmed it.

And that afternoon, she found herself seated in an opulent office. The smell of coffee and polished wood filled the space. Shelves lined with books, tall windows overlooking the restless city.

Leandro sat behind his desk, calm and composed, a faint smile tugging at his lips as his gaze pinned her in place.

“How do you feel today?” His voice was deep, commanding.

“I… I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? Or afraid to know?”

He rose slowly, circling her chair. His presence made the air itself feel heavy. Evelyn’s skin prickled under his nearness.

“Last night, you nearly gave up,” he murmured. “But I won’t allow that. You’re too valuable to vanish so easily.”

She squeezed her eyes shut. His words didn’t sound like comfort, but a claim. And disturbingly, a part of her craved that claim.

Leandro leaned close, his lips brushing her ear. “As long as you’re mine, no one can hurt you. Unless I allow it.”

A shiver ran through her. When he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his touch was both tender and possessive.

“Beautiful,” he whispered. “Even when you cry, you’re still beautiful.” His fingers tilted her chin upward, forcing her gaze to meet his. “Never look away from me. I want your eyes on me. Always.”

Her body trembled—not from fear, but from something infinitely more dangerous.

---

Days blurred together. Somehow, her steps always carried her back to his office.

“You look more alive,” he remarked one afternoon, his gaze unreadable.

“Or maybe I’ve just learned how to pretend.”

“Even pretending requires a reason. And I know your reason now… is me.”

Her breath caught. He stepped closer, standing beside her chair.

“Do you know what fascinates me most about you?”

Her voice faltered. “What?”

“Your eyes. They’re filled with wounds, but still beautiful. And I intend to own them.” His hand tilted her chin again, forcing her to look at him. “Do you know what happens when someone tries to take what belongs to me?”

She froze.

His lips curved into a shadow of a smile. “I never let that happen.”

The subtle threat made her blood run cold, yet in the same instant, she felt inexplicably… safe.

That night, he drove her home in a sleek black car. Classical music hummed faintly as silence stretched between them.

“Are you always this quiet?” he asked.

“I… don’t know what to say.”

“But your thoughts are loud, aren’t they?” Evelyn’s eyes widened. How could he know?

He smirked faintly. “I can hear them. And I know part of you has already surrendered to me.”

Her face burned. “That’s not true.”

“It is.” His certainty was absolute. “You fear me. But you crave me, too. You hate the way I control you… but you’re waiting for the next time I touch you.”

Her entire body trembled. Because deep inside, he was right.

When they reached her apartment, he held her gaze, then pressed her hand against his chest.

“Listen,” he murmured, voice raw and commanding. “My heart beats for you. Only you.” His breath scorched her skin as he leaned close.

“You can never escape me. The harder you run, the harder I’ll chase.” His lips brushed her cheek, soft yet burning.

When the door shut behind him, Evelyn collapsed against the wall, her heart still pounding violently.

She knew he was dangerous. She knew Leandro wasn’t salvation but a monster dressed as one.

And yet, beneath all that fear, one cruel truth had already taken root.

Evelyn wanted him.

And she knew—this was only the beginning.
