Chapter 1: The turquoise message
(For as long as she could remember, Luna had never felt she belonged at the orphanage. But that night, in her dream, she saw herself dying in the flames… under the cries of an angry crowd. And three voices whispered her name, as if they had been waiting for her for centuries).
(She woke up with a start, drenched in sweat, and looked around—an old figure stood nearby. Fear gripped her. Yes, she was terrified. Truly terrified. And then, before she even had the chance to fall back asleep, dawn had already broken. The sun was already rising so she went to take a bath).
(She was staring at the faucet of the shower, her eyes drifting into a distant void. The walls around her seemed drenched in a suffocating black).
"My name is Luna Singer. I live in the HOLY FAMILY orphanage located in Holme. I don't have a family, at least that's what I've been told! About what I've been told, my last name, Singer, comes from the paper that was in my left hand when I was found at the entrance of the cemetery in our small town. Weird, right?! I've always wondered why my mother or father or whoever chose the cemetery to dump me there. Weren't there other places, at least? Oh, anyway, I'm destined to be a loser, even if that lady with blue hair (which isn't normal) doesn't stop telling me that I'm either the destroyer or the savior. That's my life, cool, huh?"
(She was brushing her hair when something came flying through the window from outside, nearly hitting her in the neck. She ducked to avoid it and, after calming down, picked it up to find a package with a turquoise ribbon. She opened it, but it was empty. What nerve to throw an empty package through her window! Whoever did it... As she involuntarily shook the box from side to side, it opened. Luna dropped it on the floor but picked it up again after a few seconds and found a letter on turquoise paper that read: "YOU MUST NOT GO TO THAT CONCERT, SINGER" on the front and "TRIPLE MESSAGE" on the back. "What the heck?" she muttered to herself. What concert was it talking about? There wasn't another Singer in the orphanage. She was sure of that, but who wrote this letter? What triple message was it? Someone knocked on her door. Luna barely had time to hide the letter in the right pocket of her pink pyjamas. Renée entered and stared at her.
Renée: What are you doing?
Luna: Nothing! I'm just brushing my hair.
Renée: Yeah, sure you are (with a hint of irony). Suddenly she saw the package) Hey, are you getting secret gifts?
Luna: Here we go again. Can you tell me what brings you here, friend?
Renée: Guess!
Luna: If you won't tell me, then leave.
Renée: Hey, no need to be harsh.
Luna: I'm not being harsh.
Renée: We're going on vacation.
Luna: We?
Renée: Yeah, you won't be left behind this time. My brother agreed.
Luna: Which one? (she interrupted)
Renée: Well, John, of course. Okay, so... he asked the director for permission.
Luna: And?
Renée: And she agreed! (Luna jumped on her)
Luna: Thanks a million for getting me out of here!
Renée: But...
Luna: What?
Renée: You have to agree to everything she asks you, because she's convinced I made it all up and you don't get a say in it.
(Luna left, and Renée stayed behind, examining the empty package.)
Renée: What is she hiding from me? (She returned to her room to find her friends Ariel and Dove waiting anxiously.)
Dove: Spill! (clearly agitated)
Renée: She agreed! I'm beyond surprised. She literally jumped on me! Can you guys believe it?
Ariel: Maybe we've misjudged her.
Meanwhile, Luna walked down the hallway, reflecting on her decision. She hadn't left the orphanage for vacation in ages due to lack of family. Yet, she'd grown accustomed to life there, spending time at the library or watching horror movies she would later recount to her friends Renée, Dove, Ariel, and Cole. But why did she accept Renée's offer? Renée came from a wealthy family, often bored as the only girl among her three brothers. Perhaps Luna wanted to escape the nightmares caused by the cursed black cat with golden eyes that appeared on her windowsill every first day of the month. She'd hated cats since childhood.
Back in the common room, Luna found her friends.
Renée: So, how did it go?
Luna: Do you think I'd go in my pyjamas?
Renée: I hadn't noticed!
Luna: Luckily I did. And my hair... I don't know what came over me. Maybe it was the thrill of freedom. Dove: You'll come back! It's just a vacation (in a comedic tone).
Renée: Get dressed, and hurry. Diello will pick us up at 10. (She was packing her bags)
Dove: Oh, is it Diello? (Dove had a crush on Renée's brother Benjamin)
Renée: Yes.
Luna: Before I go... would you mind asking your brothers if there are any cats at your place? (They all laughed.) Keep laughing. I'm serious - if I find even a single hair, I'm outta there.
Renée: Don't worry, sweetie. Sam hates cats. He'd kill it if he found it even near the gate.
Luna: Hmm, okay.
(Luna left, and Chebbe, a classmate, arrived with Maddie, her shadow friend)
Chebbe: Did I really hear that, or am I going crazy?
Renée: What the fucking do you want ugly devil Chebbe?
Maddie: Did she really call me that? Listen, Renée, you're the devil with your ghostly friend. You all are crazy.
Dove: Let's make things easy. If we're the devils you speak of, what are you still doing here? You should run, run without looking back. Otherwise, the little devils will get rid of you in the worst way possible.
