Summary

My elder sister, the daughter of the principal stepmother, and I were both arranged to be married at the same time. She chose to marry the General, so I was to marry the poor scholar. Who would have thought the General would be ordered to the front and die in battle on their wedding day? Meanwhile, the poor scholar passed the imperial examinations with top honors, his future limitless. My elder sister stayed at the General's residence for two years, crying and demanding to return home. Our father, who always doted on her, slapped her and told her she must die at the General's residence, even if it meant her death. Elder sister went mad. During a visit from me, she killed me with a gold hairpin. When I opened my eyes again, we had both returned to the day of our coming-of-age ceremony. This time, elder sister rushed to say she would marry the scholar. I smiled. Did she truly dislike the idea of a leisurely, privileged life free from household worries? The world layers shackles upon me. I will break through them, layer by layer!

Chapter 1

When elder sister snatched the token from the scholar’s family, I knew she had been reborn too.

In our previous life, she had taken the General’s family’s jade pendant without a second thought, tossing the scholar’s scented sachet to me.

“Little sister, I don’t mean anything by it, but the General’s second son, though not the eldest, is still born of the legal wife. If you marry into that family, you might not fare well.”

“This scholar suits you better.”

And in this life, she was just as haughty:

“Gwen, life with the Bradley family is simple and harsh. As your elder sister who has always cared for you, I’ll let you have the advantageous match with the General’s family.”

The principal stepmother, my father’s principal wife, was so shocked that she dropped her teacup:

“Yve!”

Elder sister clutched the scented sachet tightly, leaned close to the principal stepmother, and whispered a few words.

The principal stepmother’s expression shifted from cloudy to clear, but her gaze remained heavy:

“Yve, are you sure? What if something goes wrong...”

“If something goes wrong, I still have you, Mother.”

Elder sister rested her head on the principal stepmother’s shoulder, acting coquettishly.

The principal stepmother pondered for a moment, then finally gritted her teeth:

“Fine. I will indulge you.”

My and elder sister’s marriages were thus decided. However, when preparing the dowries, the principal stepmother used the excuse that the General’s family was wealthy and the Bradley family was poor to reduce my already modest dowry further, adding the portion to elder sister’s.

I didn’t mind.

Because they were right. The General’s family was wealthy, and the Bradley family...

I just wonder if elder sister’s ten-mile-long red dowry will be enough to fill the bottomless greed of the Bradley family.
