Whispers of the Banyan

In a small village in Java, there was a banyan tree said to be cursed. Locals whispered that at midnight, the tree would call out the names of those who had wronged others, luring them to vanish without a trace.

Raka, a skeptical teenager, laughed at the stories. One night, curiosity got the better of him. He sneaked out under the pale moonlight, approaching the massive banyan. The wind was unnaturally cold, carrying faint whispers.

"Raka… Raka…"

His heart froze. The voice seemed to come from the roots themselves. Panicking, he turned to run, but the ground beneath him was soft, pulling him down as if the earth itself wanted him. The whispers grew louder, mocking, accusing, calling out his deepest regrets, secrets he never told anyone.

Suddenly, the whispers stopped. Silence pressed on him like a heavy shroud. And then… a hand, gnarled and pale, reached from the shadows of the banyan, wrapping around his ankle. Raka screamed, but no sound came out. The last thing he saw was the moonlight glinting off hollow eyes staring at him from the tree’s trunk.

By dawn, only a pair of footprints led to the tree and disappeared beneath the roots.
