The First Fight
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold. A girl stood at the edge of an empty railway platform, holding a small box tied with a silver ribbon. The train she was waiting for was late — but she knew that when it came, everything in her life would change forever.
Her name was Sam. This was the gift she had received on her tenth birthday from someone she loved. They had told her not to open it until her eighteenth birthday. Eight long years of waiting had led to this moment — but little did she know that this box would change everything.
Eight Years Ago
Sam was new at school and felt completely left out. She had moved because her aunt had taken her in after a difficult time living with another aunt. That place had burnt down, and she hadn’t wanted to be a burden. So, she had quietly left — until her aunt Luna found her.
“You are never a burden, Sam,” Luna had reassured her gently. The other aunt, Dena, had also come to live with Luna, and together they gave her a new home.
Now, standing in front of her new school’s gates, Sam couldn’t help but think about her parents. She had never known them — all she knew was that they had died in a car accident along with her newborn brother. Deep down, she blamed herself. From that day, she decided to be independent. The bold, confident, and loud girl she once was had changed into someone quieter, more reserved, and careful.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she bumped into a boy.
“Shit! Watch where you’re going, weirdo! Are you blind? Ugh, you ruined my shirt! I bet your parents are disgusting too!” he snapped.
Sam’s blood boiled. She lunged at him, fists flying. Years of pent-up frustration poured out, a strange thrill mixing with guilt. She didn’t fully understand it — all she knew was that she couldn’t stop.
The boy’s name was Liam. He was kind of cute, but Sam didn’t care. He had never met her parents, yet he had the nerve to insult them. How dare he?
Sam’s POV
“Why are you both fighting in the hallway? It’s the first day of the semester, and you’ve already caused trouble—”
I wasn’t listening to a word the guidance counselor said. All I could think about was the strange voice in my head. Someone, or something, was whispering — unclear, but certain it had to do with me. It explained why I had suddenly lashed out at Liam, why my fists had moved on their own.
