Chapter 1

The heavy mahogany doors of the royal suite slammed shut behind Prince Ranbir with a final, echoing boom. The sound felt like the sealing of his tomb. He whirled, facing the woman who had, mere hours ago, been declared his wife in a grand, hollow ceremony. Maharani Rhea. The conqueror. His jailer.

"Why?" The word was a raw scrape in his throat, defiance warring with the tremble he couldn't suppress. He backed up until his calves hit the edge of a low divan piled with silk cushions. "Why am I here?"

Rhea leaned against the door, her silhouette framed by the dying light filtering through the high, arched windows. Her emerald silks, symbols of her victory, seemed to drink the dimness. A slow, predatory smile touched her lips, utterly devoid of warmth. "Isn't it obvious, little bird? You are my husband. This is your marital chamber."

"Lay on the mattress." Her voice, suddenly sharp as a whip-crack, cut through the heavy silence. She gestured dismissively towards the immense, canopied bed dominating the room.

Ranbir recoiled as if struck. "No! You cannot have me!"

A low, mirthless chuckle escaped Rhea. She pushed off the door, her movements fluid and dangerous, like a jungle cat stalking prey. "Believe me," she purred, closing the distance with unnerving speed, "I do not want you, Prince Ranbir. Not in the way you fear... not yet. You are merely a means."

"Then why?" Ranbir demanded, anger flaring, momentarily overcoming fear. "Why did you wed me?! What possible purpose could forcing this... this farce serve?"

Rhea stopped mere inches away, her height forcing him to tilt his head back. Her dark eyes, fathomless and cold, held his. "Politics, I suppose," she drawled, the simplicity of it more terrifying than any grand scheme. "The beloved Prince of Rajgarh, the jewel of the plains... now my husband. Our... alliance," she stressed the word with biting sarcasm, "certainly makes me more palatable to the conquered masses. Quiets the whispers of rebellion." Her charming grin flashed again, sharp and predatory. "It paints me as merciful. A uniter, not just a destroyer."

"The people will never accept this!" Ranbir spat, desperation rising. "They will see it for the sham it is! They will see you for the monster you-!"

His words died in a choked gasp. Rhea’s hand had moved with blinding speed, cupping him firmly through the fine silk of his wedding trousers. Her touch wasn't gentle; it was a brand, a claim. Ranbir quivered violently, a tremor running through his entire body. He tried to jerk back, but her grip was iron.

Rhea’s smirk deepened, dark passion igniting a spark in her obsidian eyes. Her gaze dropped to where her hand held him captive. "My, my," she murmured, her voice dripping with cruel amusement. "Have you never been touched here before?"

Ranbir squeezed his eyes shut, turning his face away, a whimper escaping his clenched teeth. Shame burned hotter than any anger. It was answer enough.

A rich, dark chuckle rumbled in Rhea’s chest. "A virgin prince," she breathed, her knuckles rubbing against the trapped bulge, eliciting another helpless shudder. "Intact. Untouched. How... delightful." Her gaze snapped back to his face, the amusement hardening into something terrifying. "Well, little bird. I will have a lot of fun breaking your little virgin hole."

Panic, pure and primal, exploded in Ranbir’s chest. "No! No, please-!" He lurched backward, stumbling against the divan, trying desperately to put space between them. "Don't-!"

His plea was cut off as Rhea lunged. Her hand shot out, not towards his groin, but closing like a vice around his throat. The sound of cartilage protesting filled the sudden silence. Ranbir gagged, eyes bulging, his hands flying up to claw uselessly at her unyielding forearm. He was slammed back hard against the stone wall behind the divan, the impact rattling his teeth.

Squeezing tighter, cutting off his air completely, Rhea watched dispassionately as his face purpled, his struggles growing wilder, more frantic slaps against her immovable arm. Tears streamed from his wide, terrified eyes. A mirthful, chilling chuckle escaped her. "Such a weak, pathetic thing you are," she observed, her voice calm, almost conversational despite the violence of her grip. "I see why Prachi was so infatuated with you. She always did have a kink for damsels in distress." Rhea rolled her eyes as Ranbir’s eyes fluttered, rolling back into his head. His limbs went slack, consciousness fleeing.

With a dismissive grunt, Rhea released her grip. Ranbir collapsed bonelessly to the marble floor with a heavy thump. She crouched beside his limp form, a predator inspecting its stunned prey. For a long moment, she simply watched the shallow rise and fall of his chest. Then, with startling incongruity, she reached out and brushed her knuckles gently, almost tenderly, against his bruised cheek. The gesture was jarringly soft amidst the brutality.

"The choice is yours, my betrothed," she murmured, her voice low and intimate, yet carrying the weight of absolute command. "You will consummate our union. The only choice is how. You either do so willingly and..." she paused, letting the implication hang, "...or we can continue this... unpleasantness."

Ranbir stirred, groaning, consciousness returning like a slow, painful tide. His throat felt like crushed glass. He blinked open bleary eyes, meeting her chillingly calm gaze. Confusion, pain, and then dawning horror washed over him. Hatred flared anew. Gathering the meager strength he had left, he sucked in a ragged breath and spat weakly. It landed with a wet smear on her cheekbone, just below her cold, dark eye.

He sneered, the defiance returning despite his wrecked state. "I will never be yours willingly! I only belong to Prachi. There is no union! This isn't a marriage... it's a kidnapping! My Prachi will find me! She will-!"

Rhea slowly wiped the spittle from her face with the back of her hand. She didn’t flinch, didn’t react beyond a chilling stillness settling over her features. "Prachi," she said, the name dripping with contempt, "is a sentimental fool who thought poetry won wars." She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper that froze the blood in Ranbir’s veins. "She will be shot dead on sight if she dares step one foot onto my grounds. Believe this, Yuvraj. Believe it now. Believe it utterly. No one is coming for you."

The finality in her words was absolute, colder than the marble floor beneath him. It wasn't a threat; it was a statement of immutable fact. A shiver, deeper and more profound than any before, racked Ranbir’s body.

—He woke to the scrape of a key in a heavy lock and the soft rustle of silk. His head pounded, his throat a raw agony. He tried to move, but panic seized him as he realized his position. He was sprawled naked on the vast bed, the silk sheets cool against his skin. His wrists were bound securely by thick silk cords to the intricately carved pillars at the head of the bed, stretched taut above his head. His ankles were similarly bound, but spread wide apart by a sturdy, polished wooden rod tied between them, leaving him utterly exposed. Goosebumps prickled his skin from the cool night air and sheer terror. He was trussed like a sacrificial lamb.

The door opened. Rhea stood there, bathed in the soft light of the corridor sconces. She wore only a loose robe of blood-red silk, belted casually. Her dark hair tumbled freely over her shoulders. She surveyed him, her gaze traveling slowly, deliberately, from his bound wrists down the length of his exposed body to his spread legs and back up. A slow, predatory smirk spread across her perfect features.

"Well, well," she murmured, stepping into the chamber and closing the door softly behind her. The lock clicked with sickening finality. "Aren't you a pretty sight, little bird?"

Ranbir whimpered, straining uselessly against the silken cords. The helplessness was suffocating. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring the terrifying image of her approaching the bed. "Please..." The word was a broken whisper, torn from his bruised throat.

Rhea reached the bedside. She leaned over him, the scent of sandalwood and something darker, more primal, enveloping him. Her fingers tangled in his hair, not painfully this time, but with a possessive authority that made him flinch. She tugged his head back gently, forcing him to meet her smoldering gaze. Her dark eyes held a terrifying mixture of amusement and absolute control.

"Ah," she breathed, her thumb brushing a stray tear from his cheekbone. "He does have manners. 'Please' what, little bird?"

Ranbir squeezed his eyes shut, fresh tears escaping. The memory of her chokehold, her words about Prachi, the utter hopelessness of his situation crashed over him. He wasn't begging for mercy anymore; he was begging for the impossible. "Please... you don't have to do this."

Her low chuckle vibrated through the bed frame. It held no warmth, only the chilling promise of ownership about to be irrevocably sealed. Her free hand drifted lower, tracing a possessive line down his chest towards the trembling plane of his belly. The nightmare of consummation was no longer a threat on the horizon.

It had begun.
