Chapter 1 - The Last Taste of Freedom

The old convertible devoured the winding mountain road like it was starving for freedom. Pop music blasted from the speakers, and Ella Grayson screamed into the wind along with her two best friends-lungs burning, hair flying, heart finally unclenching for the first time in months. New York City-with its skyscrapers, its suffocating pressures, and her father's endless warnings-felt millions of miles away.

An hour later, they pulled up beside "The Cabin."

A sleek, modern house, its floor-to-ceiling windows gazing out over a tranquil lake in the distance.Silence wrapped around them-thick, peaceful, almost eerie. As if the universe itself were holding its breath.

The only sounds were the rustle of leaves and the distant cry of a hawk circling above.

The peace shattered with the buzz of multiple text alerts.

Then-*buzz. Buzz. BUZZ.*

Sophia rolled her eyes as Ella's phone lit up like a Christmas tree. "Let me guess , Judge Daddy giving you another round of safety tips?"

She cleared her throat, doing a terrifyingly accurate impression of Victor Grayson:

"Sweetheart, strangers hand out poisoned chocolates! Don't accept candy from anyone!"

Riley snorted, tossing her hair over her shoulder. "Dude. Your dad thinks the world's a Scooby-Doo episode."

Ella chuckled, tilting her face toward the warm sun."He just cares."

"Yeah," Riley grinned. "Cares enough to turn you into a paranoid princess. Come on-let's go claim our rooms before Soph hogs the one with the skylight."

-----

The day slipped by unpacking suitcases and choosing rooms.

By sunset, the three of them were sprawled on the deck, drinks in hand, watching the sky bleed orange and pink over the water.

That's when they heard it.

A low, throaty growl-motorcycle engine, cutting through the quiet like a knife.

It stopped. Just... stopped. Like the rider had pulled over to stare.

Then-*vroom*. Gone.

Sophia smirked, swirling her drink. "New neighbor?"

Unconsciously, Ella's fingers brushed the small silver pendant around her neck-a keepsake from her mother. An old, comforting habit...

"Probably just some lost tourist," she said, taking a sip of her drink.

Deep in the shadows, the rider pulled off his black helmet.

Gabriel's gray eyes, motionless and sharp, locked onto the warm glow of the lakeside house.

Into a mic barely visible against his jaw, he spoke:

"Target's secure. Location's quiet. Sensors are live."

A brief static crackled in his earpiece, then came the reply:

"Keep her close, Gab. Morties is moving. We're pushing the case forward here. Stay sharp over there."

Gabriel didn't answer.

His gaze remained fixed on Ella, now laughing with her friends, bathed in golden twilight-completely unaware of the storm hurting toward her. The girl he was assigned to protect... even if it cost him his life.
