The Shattering &Chapter 1

Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating the ruins of the village. Lyra, barely ten, ran through the debris, her small hands trembling as the air around her shimmered. She didn’t know what she was doing—she only knew she had to survive.

A voice screamed inside her head—not hers, not entirely hers. It was Ash. “Get out! Now!” Another, softer, chimed in—Nova. “Please, careful!” Riven roared with fury, tearing through shadows. Elowen whispered instructions she didn’t understand.

Her powers flared uncontrollably, a torrent of light and shadow splitting the night. She felt herself split too—her soul shattering into pieces to survive the horror. By the time the screams stopped, she was gone, replaced by fragments of herself, each carrying a piece of her past, each carrying a power she didn’t yet understand.

And somewhere in the darkness, a figure watched, eyes glowing silver. “She will be remarkable,” he said. “If she survives.”

Chapter One: Fractured Dawn

Lyra’s hands burned with silver light before she even realized what she was doing. One moment, she was brushing her hair, the next, shards of it floated around her, slicing the morning sunlight into jagged patterns. The energy thrummed in her veins, wild and insistent.

“Ash… calm!” a small, soft voice whispered in her mind.

“Calm?” Ash snapped, sharp and commanding. “We’re under attack! I’ll handle it!”

“Not like this,” Nova muttered, tiny and hesitant. “We could hurt someone!”

Riven growled, dark and impatient. “Let me rip them apart! Why are we holding back?”

Elowen’s voice, calm and measured, threaded through the chaos. “Breathe. Observe. Do not let your fear fracture us further.”

Lyra swallowed hard, gripping the window sill for support. Her reflection in the cracked glass didn’t match her feeling—four faces stared back, overlaying one another, each watching her, judging, commanding. I’m not ready for this, she thought. And yet, I have no choice.

The marketplace outside hummed with morning energy. Merchants arranged their wares, children chased each other through the stalls, and the scent of soulfire candles mixed with baked bread and wet stone. The world moved in slow motion, as though it feared her power.

Without warning, her shards flared, floating outward in arcs, cutting through the air. A basket of apples tipped over, wooden crates splintered, and a flutter of frightened birds erupted from a nearby stall.

“Lyra! Control it!” Nova cried.

“I am controlling it!” Ash snapped, and the shards extended, shimmering like silver blades.

Riven, always hungry for destruction, surged forward in a rush of dark energy. “No! We should finish this!”

“No,” Lyra gasped, gripping her temples. “Stop—please!”

Elowen’s voice was a tether. “Focus on your core, Lyra. Channel your fear, not your anger. You are the center, not the shards.”

She tried. Deep breaths. She could feel the energy shifting in response to her intent, slowing just enough for her to redirect it, but the shards still hovered, ready to obey whichever alter was strongest.

Then she saw him. Across the street, a tall figure in a dark hood. He didn’t move like the others, didn’t flee like the panicked crowd. He simply watched, one hand raised slightly, almost testing her.

Her stomach dropped. Something about him resonated deep in her fragmented soul. The shards dimmed, hesitated. One of her alters—Ash—hissed in warning. Don’t trust him.

Riven, intrigued, growled, Interesting… I like him.

Nova whimpered. “Lyra, please, he’s dangerous. Don’t—”

Elowen whispered, “Observe. Learn. Not every reflection is an enemy.”

The figure stepped closer. Silver light shimmered around him, faint but undeniable, as though he could sense her soul—and all of its fractures.

“Lyra,” he said, voice deep and layered, resonating inside her head. “You can’t hide anymore.”

Lyra froze. Her shards swirled, anxious. “How… how do you know my name?”

Ash barked, We don’t answer questions from strangers!

“Not a stranger,” the man said. “Someone who understands. Someone who can see you—really see you.”

Riven, never subtle, muttered, I like him. I want to see what he can do.

Nova’s voice cracked, “You don’t know him! This is dangerous!”

Elowen’s calm insistence broke through. “Focus. There’s truth in his presence. Pay attention.”

Lyra’s chest tightened as the shards hummed in response to the figure. For the first time, all four alters seemed to pause simultaneously—Ash’s anger, Riven’s aggression, Nova’s fear, Elowen’s calm—all suspended.

The crowd whispered. Some pointed. She could feel their eyes, probing, searching. She ducked behind a stall, shards spinning protectively, shimmering in silver arcs.

The figure tilted his head. “You’ve been hiding fragments of yourself for too long. Your power is extraordinary. But if you continue to run… you’ll never be whole.”

Lyra’s stomach churned. Whole? None of her alters had used that word before. A flicker of something—curiosity? longing?—passed through her.

“Stay back!” Ash commanded, shards snapping forward.

“I’m not here to harm you,” the figure said. “I can help.”

Nova whimpered, Can we trust him?

Riven chuckled darkly, Oh, we will… or he dies trying.

Lyra pressed her palms together, trying to gather her strength. We can’t lose control… not now.

But the figure’s eyes held hers, silver light reflecting across the shards. One word echoed in her mind, piercing through the chaos:

“Together.”

And for a heartbeat, the voices inside her stopped. All of them. The shards slowed.

Lyra realized something chilling and exhilarating at once: whatever this man wanted, her life—and her soul—would never be the same.
