SYNOPSIS

The golden lights of the Jacob mansion glittered like stars, habang nagkakatuwaan ang mga bisita sa engrandeng ballroom. Everything was grand — from the sparkling chandeliers down to the guests dressed in designer gowns. But for Stefania Gregoryo, every laugh, every whisper, felt like knives cutting through her chest.

Hawak-hawak niya ang invitation na ibinigay ng papa niya that morning — “Jacob Clan’s Annual Thanksgiving Gala.” Ayaw niyang pumunta. Ayaw niyang makita siya. Pero deep inside, umaasa pa rin siya. Maybe, just maybe, Ben Jacob would still look at her the same way he used to.

Ben Jacob — the second son of the Jacob clan, one of the top 10 richest and most powerful families in the

country. The man who once told her, “I don’t care about money, Stef. Love is enough.”

But tonight, love wasn’t enough.

Stefania adjusted her simple borrowed gown, her hands trembling as she walked into the hall. People turned to look. Some smiled politely, others whispered. She didn’t belong here — and she knew it.

And then she saw him.

Ben.

Standing confidently in a black tailored suit, smiling like he owned the world. But what made Stefania freeze wasn’t his presence… it was the woman holding his arm.

Brenda.

Her cousin.

“Stefania?” Brenda said in a voice dripping with fake sweetness. “Oh my gosh, you’re here?”

Hindi agad nakasagot si Stefania. Her chest tightened as she looked at their intertwined hands. Brenda leaned closer to Ben, smiling proudly — as if showing off a trophy.

“Why…” Stefania’s voice trembled, her throat dry. “Why her, Ben?”

Ben’s face froze. “Stef, please. Let’s not do this here.”

But she stepped forward, tears threatening to fall. “You promised me, Ben. You said you loved me.”

Brenda smirked. “Oh, please. Ben told me everything. You were just… temporary. A little charity project.”

Gasps echoed around the hall. Lahat ng bisita, nakatingin na sa kanila.

“Brenda, stop,” Ben hissed, but his voice was too weak — too guilty.

Stefania’s eyes filled with tears, but she refused to look away. “A charity project? After all these years?”

Ben’s silence was louder than any words.

Stefania shook her head, bitterness replacing the pain. “You wanted your father’s approval. And I wasn’t enough for that, right?”

He opened his mouth, but she didn’t let him. “You could’ve just told me. You didn’t have to make me believe we still had a future.”

Then — pak!

The sound of her slap echoed across the ballroom. Everyone stopped. Even the music died down.

Brenda gasped, clutching Ben’s arm. “You’re crazy!”

“No,” Stefania said in a low, trembling voice. “I just finally woke up.”

With that, she turned and ran — heels echoing against the marble floor, tears blurring her vision. The whispers followed her all the way out.

Paglabas niya ng mansion, malamig ang hangin. She finally broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Every memory of Ben — the laughter, the plans, the promises — flashed in her mind like cruel reminders of her stupidity.

“Ang tanga mo, Stef…” she whispered to herself, her voice shaking. “You believed in forever, when he only believed in status.”

Rain started to fall. First soft, then heavy. Pero hindi siya tumigil sa paglakad. She didn’t even know where she was going. Her makeup washed away with her tears, but she didn’t care anymore.

Hours passed until she found herself standing near the Civil Registrar Hall. The irony hit her — ito yung place na pinangarap niyang pakasalan si Ben noon.

But fate had other plans.

Under the building’s awning stood a man, drenched from the rain, holding a crumpled paper. His tie was loose, his eyes tired.

Cleo Clarkson.

A stranger. But there was something in him that mirrored her — the pain, the emptiness.

He looked up when he noticed her. “Rough night?” he asked dryly, handing her a handkerchief.

Stefania gave a weak smile. “Something like that.”

“Breakup?” he asked again.

“Worse,” she said bitterly. “Humiliation.”

He let out a humorless chuckle. “Then we’re the same. I just got dumped an hour before my wedding.”

Stefania blinked. “Ouch.”

“Yeah.” He sighed. “You?”

She looked away. “My boyfriend cheated. With my cousin.”

“Double ouch,” he said, and for the first time, she laughed — a soft, broken laugh that somehow felt like breathing again.

They stood in silence, the rain filling the gap between them. Two strangers, both lost.

“You know what’s funny?” Cleo said suddenly. “This building… I came here to get married, but now I’m standing here alone. And you — you look like you came here to cry.”

Stefania chuckled. “Maybe fate’s just cruel.”

“Or ironic,” he replied.

After a while, Cleo looked at her with curious eyes. “If you could start over right now — just erase everything and begin again — would you?”

Stefania thought for a moment, then nodded slowly. “Yes. I think I would.”

He smiled faintly. “Then maybe we should.”

She frowned. “Should what?”

“Start over.”

It sounded absurd. Crazy, even. But something in Cleo’s tone — calm, steady, tired yet sincere — made her hesitate.

And somehow, that hesitation led to the most unexpected decision of her life.

By noon, after a strange series of conversations and an unexpected misunderstanding at the registrar’s office, they found themselves sitting in front of a clerk, pens in hand.

“What’s your name again?” Cleo asked, half-smiling.

“Stefania Gregoryo,” she replied, her heart pounding. “Yours?”

“Cleo Clarkson.”

The clerk cleared his throat. “Are you ready?”

They looked at each other. Neither smiled, neither spoke — yet both nodded.

They signed.

Two signatures.

Two broken souls.

One fateful marriage.

Paglabas nila ng building, tahimik na ulit ang paligid. The rain had stopped, but the ground still shimmered with puddles. Stefania stared at the paper in her hands — Marriage Certificate.

It didn’t feel real. Yesterday, she was just a heartbroken girl abandoned at a party. Now, she was married to a stranger.

Cleo slipped his hands into his pockets. “Well,” he said quietly, “guess we both got our fresh start.”

She looked up at him — this mysterious man with pain in his eyes and a calm voice that somehow steadied her heart.

Maybe destiny wasn’t cruel after all. Maybe it was just… unpredictable.

And as she walked beside him, the paper clutched tightly in her hand, Stefania whispered to herself,

“Maybe this is where my story really begins.”
