Chapter 1: 🥀 rosetendale 🥀
As the family's aging sedan rumbled through the maze of city streets, 16-year-old Cade stared out the window, his face pressed lightly against the cool glass. Towering skyscrapers loomed above like steel giants, casting long shadows over the bustling sidewalks below. People rushed past in every direction briefcases in hand, phones to ears, conversations overlapping into a constant hum. The chaos of the city pulsed with life, loud and unrelenting.
It was a far cry from the world Cade had always known.
Back in the countryside, his days had been painted with the golden hues of sunrise over rolling hills, the whisper of wind through tall green grass, and the gentle symphony of birdsong. Silence there wasn't empty it was peaceful. Comforting. Now, the sharp blare of car horns, the distant wail of sirens, and the ceaseless chatter of strangers made his head spin. The city didn't feel alive to him it felt overwhelming.
Their move hadn't come out of nowhere. Cade's father had accepted a new job one that promised better pay, stability, and a fresh start. The family had made the hard decision to leave behind the only home they'd ever known in search of something more. But Cade wasn't sure what "more" meant anymore. The only thing he felt was loss of the familiar, of comfort, of everything he'd grown up with.
As the car finally pulled up to their new apartment building a tall, grey structure that seemed to stretch into the sky Cade's stomach twisted into a tight knot. He looked up at the windows, some glowing with warm light, others dark and empty. This was supposed to be home now?
His mom turned from the front seat, her eyes soft and voice gentle. "It's going to be okay, sweeties," she said, glancing at Cade and his younger sibling. "We'll make this new place feel like home in no time."
Cade tried to smile back, but it barely reached his eyes. Stepping out onto the cold concrete sidewalk, he felt the city's energy hit him all at once. The buzz beneath his feet, the press of strangers walking by, the sheer scale of everything it made him feel impossibly small.
He glanced up at the sky, barely visible through the gaps in the buildings, and exhaled. This wasn't home. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But deep down, beneath the nervousness and doubt, a tiny spark of hope flickered.
Maybe just maybe his new life would surprise him.
