Chapter 1

The sun hung low in the Seattle sky, casting a golden hue over the courtyard of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. It should have been another routine day, but the air was electric with an unspoken promise of change. Derek Shepherd stood outside with Meredith, Mark, Izzy, and Alex, their laughter mingling with the distant hum of the city. The camaraderie was comforting, a moment of respite in the chaotic lives they led.

A week had passed since Derek and Leslie Hawkins, a brilliant and spirited intern, had begun their whirlwind romance. Her long, dirty blonde hair and warm brown eyes were etched into his mind, a constant beacon of light. Leslie, with her quick wit and sarcastic humor, had a way of making even the most mundane moments feel extraordinary. They had just parted ways, Leslie mentioning she needed to speak with Cristina before joining him for a late dinner.

The ground shook violently, ripping Derek from his thoughts. The sound of an explosion tore through the air, sending a shockwave of disbelief through the group. The second floor of the hospital erupted into chaos, flames licking at the edges of the building as smoke billowed into the sky.

Heart pounding, Derek's mind raced. Leslie. She had been inside. With Cristina.

The scene was a blur of sirens and shouts as police and firefighters swarmed the area. Derek's instincts screamed at him to run, to find her, but a wall of authorities blocked his path. Frustration and fear battled within him, each second stretching into eternity.

Miranda Bailey emerged from the chaos, her expression a mix of determination and fatigue. Derek rushed to her side, his voice betraying the desperation he felt. “Bailey, have you seen Leslie?”

Bailey met his gaze, her voice steady despite the turmoil. “She was on the second floor with Cristina.”

Derek's heart sank. The second floor—where the explosion had originated. His mind conjured images of Leslie, her laughter, her bright eyes, her undeniable spirit. He refused to believe anything could snuff out that light.

Beside him, Meredith reached for his hand, offering silent support. Mark, Izzy, and Alex stood in tense solidarity, each dealing with their own fears for those trapped inside.

Inside the hospital, amidst the chaos and debris, Leslie Hawkins clung to consciousness. Her ears rang with the echo of the explosion, her surroundings a haze of smoke and shadows. She blinked, trying to focus, to find some semblance of reality in the nightmare.

“Leslie!” Cristina’s voice cut through the fog, sharp and resilient. Leslie turned her head, her relief palpable as she saw her friend emerging from the dust. Cristina knelt beside her, assessing the situation with practiced calm.

“Cristina, what happened?” Leslie croaked, her voice raw.

Cristina shook her head. “I don’t know, but we need to get out of here.”

Together, they navigated the devastation, their path fraught with danger. Leslie’s thoughts flickered to Derek, the warmth of his smile, the promise of their nascent relationship. She clung to the hope that she would see him again, that they would find their way out of this nightmare.

Outside, Derek felt the weight of helplessness crushing him. He needed to do something, anything, to save Leslie and the others trapped inside. As the minutes ticked by, his resolve hardened. He would find a way to reach her, to pull her from the ruins and into the safety of his arms.

Amidst the uncertainty and fear, one truth remained: love, in its rawest form, was the force driving him forward, a beacon in the chaos, promising that this was not the end, but merely the beginning of a story yet to unfold.
