Chapter 1

I do not know why I agreed to be here but here I am entering the Palace of Slovia along with other maids. Everyone is keeping their head down except me, I am looking everywhere around the long pillars and multiple staircases and chandeliers. Every corner of the palace embodies luxury and comfort for the elites. I examine the number of doors located in the first floor itself. God only knows why there are so many.

My decision to join this long line of women was encouraged by my cousin Laudia. She is my only family who had been selected for a job here in the palace but her destiny had other plans, she got sick just a day before and was not permitted to participate. Since we need the money I agreed to replace her for three months after which she can join. Until then I have asked her to do a job which was meant for me in the coffee house and that starts after a week. I hope she'll be fine by then. The difference between the privileged and people like us is huge and unlike them we have to work extra hard and this factor sometimes pisses me off.

As soon as a golden door comes into view we are asked to put our head down which turns my mood off instantly because the idea just doesn't fit right in my dictionary. But what can I do about it? Nothing, so I put my head down and slowly enter the courtroom. The red carpet beneath my feet looks more polished than my life.

The large door gets shut behind us and nobody speaks. The room is occupied by many people belonging to different ranks yet no one dares to utter a word. Silence envelopes the room and it feels suffocating especially since my head is down for discriminatory reason.

"My lord, we come from small corners of the kingdom, to serve you and the members of your house excellently. We guarantee to you that there will be no problems from our side since we've recruited top individuals for the duties in thy Royal Household." I hear the head of this team, Mrs. Roselyn speak in her thick british accent to the Lord of the throne. He must be old now. Last time I saw him I was a teenager and now I am an adult.

I tap my feet on the carpet unknowingly when the person sitting on the throne takes time to respond. The girl beside me nudges me with her arm and I frown at her rudeness so when I look to her side I raise my head due to why I see a pair of dark brown eyes staring at me sharply with a deep frown on his forehead. The man ahead of me is not that old man who I had seen once but a young man and if I am not mistaken very attractive. His messy hair, a mix of silver and blonde styled to perfection and his eyes so deep which made me feel as though he was sucking my soul out of me. However, even though he looked charming his aura felt dark and intimidating. He definitely is someone who I wouldn't want to cross any paths with so I quickly look down. My heart beat racing rapidly, the more I think about his face and an unreadable look he held.

"Welcome. I expect nothing but excellence, responsibility and obedience" His emphasis on the word obedience may have been directed to me, I feel so since I was the only one who broke the rule of keeping my head down but again what is there to be ashamed about? It's going to be the last time I see him. Hopefully because his eyes are still haunting me as I turn to leave the room.
