In Debt to My Brother-in-Law

Liliana had always believed that life carried its own quiet rhythm. Yet lately, she had begun to wonder if fate had a cruel sense of dark humor.

At twenty-nine, she became a widow.

Her handsome and reliable husband had died suddenly in a car accident just five weeks earlier. He was not an ordinary man—he was Arthur Sinclair, heir of the Sinclair family.

His sudden death not only plunged Liliana into overwhelming grief, but also turned the glare of the media’s spotlight directly onto her.

Photographers followed her as if her grief were a show to be put on display.

Even when she kept her head down, slipped into cars through side doors, and refused to speak, the tabloids would not leave her alone.

And then, just when the whispers about her had begun to quiet, the bigger news broke—Arthur had left everything to her!

Arthur’s will had placed the reins of the family’s gemstone company, Crown Legacy Gems, directly in Liliana’s hands.

The news exploded like a bomb and became the latest gossip headline.

The love between her and Arthur, and the trust shown in his will, once again turned every eye toward the young, beautiful widow of the Sinclair family.

However, in all the noise and endless chatter, only one person carried the weight in silence—Liliana herself.

On the surface, her new role looked regal and glamorous. She was the young widow who had become the lady of an empire.

But Liliana knew the truth.

From the first day she stepped into the headquarter, she saw how hollow the once-great company had become.

The books bled red ink, creditors hovered like vultures, and sales had slowed to almost nothing. The proud Sinclair name was now only a mask hiding ruin.

Worse still, she had no real experience in business and no network in the ruthless gemstone world.

If she had any connection to the trade at all, it was only that before her marriage she had worked as an auctioneer, auctioning many costly haute couture and luxury jewels.

That had made her known for her graceful stage presence, her deep and meticulous expertise in art, her quick reactions, and her flawless beauty.

For a time, she was the shining star of the auction world, her reputation sealed when she brought a rare pink diamond under the hammer for a record-shattering price.

But that glittering triumph seemed a lifetime ago.

In her three years as Arthur’s wife, she had only been the society hostess—the elegant Sinclair matron in designer gowns and pearls, admired for her grace but kept far away from the real workings of power.

To make up for that lack of experience, Liliana threw herself into work day and night.

But even with endless overtime, she still felt completely overwhelmed—drowning in contracts to review, numbers to untangle, and reams of specialized gemstone knowledge far beyond what she had once needed as an auctioneer.

Liliana felt as if the pressure chased her every single day. There was always too much to do, too much to learn, and never enough time.

In the quiet of night, when she was finally alone, sometimes the weight broke her down.

She missed Arthur so much it hurt.

And she was so lonely. She wished someone could be there—someone who could ease her pain and help her face the company’s troubles.

It was as if God had heard her prayers.

Another long night found her bent over her desk, eyes fixed on the glowing computer screen, when her phone rang.

Liliana reached out absently, glancing at the screen—and froze.

The name flashing there was the last one she expected to see.

After three long seconds of hesitation, she answered.

A low voice came through, edged with a smile: “Long time. How have you been? Do you have time to meet?”

“Leo? When did you come back?” She said.

Leo Sinclair—Arthur’s younger brother. The black sheep of the family.

The boy who had left years ago to carve his own empire abroad.

He had been enormously successful over the years, his face often gracing the covers of financial magazines.

Liliana had only seen him a few times—at her wedding and at a handful of family gatherings. Tall and striking, with sharp blue eyes and a smile that always carried a hint of mischief, he had always looked a little out of place at the formal Sinclair dinners.

But Liliana had heard plenty of stories about him.

She heard he owned ski resorts in the Alps, shipping businesses in the Mediterranean, and multiple villas in Dubai.

She also heard that he was always changing girlfriends—sometimes a super model, sometimes a glamorous influencer, sometimes an outstanding actress.

Arthur had rarely spoken of his younger brother. They were never close. He once explained to her that the age gap was too large; fifteen years apart meant they grew up in different worlds.

Liliana had always understood. Because it wasn’t just the age difference—their personalities and ways of doing things were also very far apart.

If Arthur had been the kind of man who was a gentle, charismatic, and dependable leader, then Leo was the kind of man who felt like a dangerous, unpredictable challenger.

And beyond that, there was something else too—something that had always kept Liliana far away from Leo.

Though Liliana had only seen him a few times, whenever their eyes met she felt an instinctive fear she couldn’t explain—something in his gaze made her feel like prey under a hunter’s stare.

She had always avoided him when she could.

But now, in this devastating moment, the presence of this brother-in-law felt oddly like the arrival of an ally.

Liliana felt as if the day’s fatigue melted away. Her fingers tightened around the phone with a quiet rush of joy, the pink diamond on her ring finger catching the light.

“I’m so happy to hear from you,” she said. “Since you’re back, why don’t you come home for a visit? Tell me what you’d like to eat—I’ll cook for you myself. We can sit down and talk.”

On the other end, Leo was silent for a beat before letting out a low, amused laugh. “What an honor. But shouldn’t you have more important things to do than cooking for me?”

Liliana paused. “What do you mean?”

Another soft laugh came through the line. “Don’t be nervous. I’m only curious. Taking over such a large company all of a sudden—have you been managing it smoothly so far?”

All these years she had heard plenty from Arthur and the rest of the family about Leo’s lack of interest in their business. And now, that very fact made him almost the only person she could tell the truth to.

Liliana let out a long sigh and said honestly, “To be honest… not very well.”

His voice came back without the slightest surprise. “Do you need help?”

The simple question nearly broke her. After carrying the weight alone for so many days, she almost burst into tears right then.

Fighting to steady her trembling voice, she whispered, “If you could come and help me… that would mean so much.”

He laughed softly. “All right. Then come to my place—we can talk about the details.”

She was surprised. “You’re not coming home first?”

“Home? You mean my brother’s place? No. I have a place of my own here. I’ll send the car for you.”

***

The Rolls-Royce Phantom glided through the city, until it pulled up in front of a modern glass villa that glittered under the dusk sky.

The car pulled up to the gates, and as Liliana stepped out, the house manager was already waiting. “Ms. Liliana, this way please. Mr. Sinclair is expecting you in the study.”

That name—Mr. Sinclair—made her falter for a second. How many times had she heard people use that title for Arthur?

A wave of confusion washed over her, but she quickly gathered herself and followed the manager into the vast villa.

They passed through a spacious living room and along wide halls before stopping at a heavy wooden door. The manager gave a polite knock. From inside came a calm voice: “Come in.”

The door swung open, and the manager gestured for Liliana to step inside.

It was an enormous study, with towering shelves of books on one side and glass display cases of art on the other. Even at a glance she already spot multiple priceless jade and glittering jewels.

Directly ahead, the floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto a private pool, its surface reflecting the lights like shards of sapphire.

There he stood: Leo Sinclair.

Broad-shouldered in a tailored charcoal shirt that clung to the lines of his chest, sleeves rolled casually to reveal strong forearms.

His short brown hair caught the glow of the lights, and when he turned, the icy brilliance of his eyes locked onto her.

“Liliana.” His voice was smooth, low, with the faintest curl of a smile. “It’s been a long time.”

She smiled. “Leo… I’m so glad you came back. I— The company—”

As she spoke, Leo began to walk toward her slowly.

Behind him the pool shimmered with a sapphire glow, the light catching in his eyes until they looked as if filled with starlight.

He kept coming closer, closer, until he was standing directly before her.

Liliana’s voice grew softer and softer, faltering entirely under the weight of his gaze.

In that moment, his icy blue eyes made her feel like prey once again, caught in the hunter’s line of sight.

The air shifted, charged with something dangerous.

She cleared her throat, steadied herself, and forced a small smile. “Leo? Is everything ok?”

He stood so close she had to fight the urge to step back. She could almost feel the warmth radiating from his body.

There was the faint trace of cologne on him, mingled with a hint of alcohol.

Liliana forced herself to keep her gaze steady, meeting his eyes.

Leo smiled faintly, the kind of smile that carried unspoken power.

“You didn’t come here just to see me,” he said softly. “Didn’t you say you need help?”

“Yes,” she admitted quickly.

“What do you need?”

Liliana felt a little out of place.

Though she and Leo had never been close, they were still family, and after so long apart—especially now, when she needed his help—she had expected at least a little small talk first.

But he went straight to the point.

Maybe that was simply his style.

She stood in silence for a moment before answering. “The company is bleeding money. Losses everywhere…”

“So you need money?” he cut in, tilting his head.

Liliana nodded. “Yes. And we also desperately need to cut costs—”

“I understand,” Leo said smoothly. “I can help you.”

Relief washed over Liliana. Her shoulders loosened, and even his presence felt a little less suffocating.

She lifted her head slightly, eyes glimmering. “Thank you so much, Leo.”

Before she could say more, Leo lifted his hand and gently held her left hand!

Then he twisted the dazzling pink diamond ring on her ring finger slowly, letting the gem catch the light.

Liliana’s left hand was caught in his grip, and she went completely stiff.

Leo looked perfectly at ease, as if he were simply holding the hand of a close relative to comfort her. But they were not close at all—they had barely met a few times as brother- and sister-in-law.

The sudden intimacy left Liliana utterly at a loss.

If anyone were to see… just the thought of those relentless photographers made her stomach tighten with dread.

She tried to pull her hand back, but Leo held on.

Then he moved closer, his other hand settling firmly on her waist.

Liliana’s body stiffened at the touch, and before she could react, he turned her quickly and pressed her against the wall.

Her emerald eyes flew wide. Their position was far too close—no, far too intimate. What kind of brother‑in‑law would pin his sister‑in‑law against the wall like this?

Instinctively she started to push him away, but before her hand reached his chest, he spoke.

His voice was low, filled with danger. “I can help you. But, Liliana… nothing in this world comes for free.”

She froze, her hand still halfway between them, and looked at him in confusion. “What… do you mean?”

Leo lowered his mouth to her ear, his breath hot against her skin. “I’ll save your empire,” he said softly. “But I have one condition.”

Her gaze lifted to his face.

He was unbearably handsome, but all she felt was the sharp edge of danger, like glass about to shatter.

She was a deer frozen under a lion’s stare, her throat already exposed.

Every instinct begged him to stop, to let her go, to give her even the smallest chance to escape.

Yet with his body pinning her to the wall, she could do nothing.

Leo’s smile deepened.

After a long moment, he said, “You’ll pay me with your body. Every part of you will belong to me.”
