Between yesterday and today

I am a girl with four siblings — two brothers and two sisters.

My brother Mohamed was 23 years old, and he was the closest to my heart.

He was kind, loved by everyone, handsome and tall, with green eyes and a smile that could melt away any sadness.

One day, he received a call to join the national service.

He told us he was going to fulfill his duty, but the place he was assigned to was very far away — two full days of travel to reach it.

He had never been away from us before, so the farewell was incredibly hard.

We took him to the station, and the air was filled with emotion.

We hugged him tightly, took pictures together, prayed for him with all our hearts… and then he left.

Two days later, he arrived at his destination.

A week passed, then another, and we didn’t hear from him often.

Four long months went by, and we missed him terribly.

Then one day, he surprised us with a visit!

We could hardly believe our eyes — our joy was indescribable.

He couldn’t stay for long, but he would always make that long journey just to see us, no matter how tired he was.

Later, he came back again — this time full of happiness — he had finally finished his national service.

He proudly showed us his new card, and the whole family gathered.

We laughed, we celebrated — it felt like a real holiday.

A week later, my mother decided to invite his friends for dinner.

We cooked delicious food and shared laughter around the table, but Mohamed felt tired and developed a mild fever.

We thought it was just a simple cold…

Two days later — and I wish that day had never come — my other brother went to knock on his door, but Mohamed didn’t answer.

We knocked again and again. No response.

We broke the door open, and I ran to see what was happening…

That was the moment my world fell apart.

I found my brother sleeping a sleep that no one could ever wake him from.

He had left this world peacefully — like an angel. 🕊️

After his death, I stopped working.

My family and I lost all desire for life. Everything lost its meaning.

Thank God for the two little girls — my elder sister’s daughters — they are the ones who bring a bit of light back into our home, a small warmth amid the heavy silence he left behind.

Alhamdulillah, we thank God for being with us, for giving us patience.

Everything passes, and life goes on…

But my brother — he will never be forgotten. 🕊️

A true story, written with love and tears.
