CHAPTER 1: BOREDOM
ALEXANDER BLACKWOOD
Monday.
One of the most hated days in the world.
Okay, maybe ‘hate’ is too strong a word to describe it. Just kidding. ‘HATE’ is the perfect candidate.
But this particular Monday must deserve a prize or something, cause today’s Tuesday, and every time Alexander remembers the previous day’s events, he felt like committing arson.
Sitting in his office, he replayed the whole thing for the umpteenth time in his head. And annoyance surged through him once more.
But before he could vent his anger on inanimate objects, his consigliere, stormed in. Alexander let out an annoyed sigh.
” Victor, ever met a gentleman called ‘Knocking’? “
Victor seemed out of breath.” Forgive me boss. But I have urgent news.”
“What is it?”
“The Russians. They’re moving in on our territory.”
“Which one?”
“Well, if you’re asking for specifics, they’re after the investment we have, the one that arrives next week.”
“So?”
Victor had confusion written all over his young face. “What do you mean, ‘so?’, aren’t we supposed to do something?”
When Alexander chose Victor as his consigliere, the brains and wittiness had stood out, proving he could be of use to his.... organisation. But of course, there were times like this, when he could just be plain clueless.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, and using a tone reserved for the terminally ill, Alexander said, “ I mean, ‘so, what are you suggesting?’ “
“Oh, my suggestion?”
His boss’ eyebrow went up.
“Well, I suggest immediate action to subdue them, and send a message.”
Alex stifled a yawn. “You’re suggesting war?”
“In crude terms, yes, sir.”
“War would bring unnecessary problems. And as much as I love drama, I’m simply not in the mood for it.”
“But, sir?”
“Yes?”
“What are you suggesting?”
“Eclipse is coming in next week. Select one of the footmen, and have him oversee the shipment, make the Russians think he’s a weak link.”
Victor let out a heavy sigh. “But, boss...”
“If I hear you questioning my ideas, Victor...”
“No, sir, I wouldn’t dare. Don’t you think we should eliminate the threat as soon as possible?”
In the middle of their conversation Alexander had gotten off his seat and stood at the window, eyeing the city below. But now he faced Victor, and approached him slowly, only stopping to respect the younger man’s personal space bubble.
“Victor, I pay you to be smart, not rash. I cannot attack them unprovoked. Do you hear me?”
“Yes sir.”
“Good. Further instructions shall be given at the meeting.”
“Um...where’s the meeting, sir?”
“At the place I bought.”
“You buy alot of places, sir.”
He forgot that.
“It’s at the library.”
“Pardon me sir, I thought I heard library.”
“You heard correctly. Now, prepare my car, cause I have to scope the premises.”
“Okay,sir.”
As Victor walked out of the room, Alexander couldn’t help but say, “Poor kid.” With a small chuckle, he grabs his suit jacket, and leaves the room.
