Chapter 1: The Hunger
{The Hunger}i
The moon hung low and full over the forest, its pale light slipping through the thick pines. Aiden Vale crouched on the cliff’s edge, the wind tugging at his dark hair. His heart pounded—not from the climb, but from the rising hunger that always came with the full moon.
He gritted his teeth. Not again. Not tonight.
The transformation had started subtly—his fangs ached, his nails sharpened, and a low growl rumbled from deep within him. He hated it. Hated that his body betrayed him every month. The beast inside didn’t care about morality or control; it only cared for blood.
He leapt down from the cliff in one fluid motion, landing silently on the forest floor. Every scent assaulted him: deer, foxes… and then—a human. Warm blood. Sweet, tantalizing. His claws twitched, his ears flattened.
“Stay calm,” he whispered to himself. “You don’t need them.”
But the hunger didn’t listen. It surged like fire through his veins, coiling around his heart. Aiden stumbled, gripping a tree trunk to steady himself. He had trained for years to resist it, to feed only on animals and keep humans safe. But tonight… tonight, the pull was stronger than ever.
A rustle in the bushes made him freeze.
“Kai?” A soft voice called, uncertain, human.
Aiden’s eyes shot toward the sound. A boy, maybe his age, was tangled in a trap meant for deer, blood streaking down his arm. The smell hit Aiden like a punch. Warm, sweet, human… and he could almost taste it.
Aiden’s body tensed. No, no, no!
But Kai didn’t scream. He looked at him with wide, trusting eyes. “P-please… help me.”
Aiden wanted to run, to hide in the shadows, to let the beast take over and tear free. Instead, he swallowed the urge and forced himself forward. His claws retracted, fingers trembling as he reached for the boy.
“You shouldn’t be out here alone,” Aiden muttered, voice rough and low.
Kai flinched, but nodded. “I… I was just hiking. I didn’t think…” His words faltered. His gaze flicked to Aiden’s hands, then his eyes widened as he noticed the faint gleam of claws forming.
Aiden froze. The transformation had started too early. He cursed under his breath, pressing his palms together. Control it. Please, just a little longer.
The boy didn’t run. He just stared, unafraid. And that unafraid stare—soft, human—was like salt on Aiden’s wound. It anchored him.
With careful movements, he released the trap, helping Kai free his arm. Blood dripped onto the forest floor, and Aiden felt the beast snarl beneath his skin. He shook it off, took a deep breath, and forced his human self to the surface.
Kai winced as he pulled his arm free, wincing at the pain. “T-thank you…” His voice was soft, sincere.
Aiden nodded, his heart pounding—not from hunger, but from the boy’s presence. “Stay away from the forest at night,” he said quietly, though every instinct screamed for him to stay.
Kai’s gaze lingered on him, curious and unafraid. “I… I think I might see you again, won’t I?”
Aiden’s eyes narrowed, conflicted. The answer was yes—and it terrified him.
The full moon climbed higher, bathing the forest in silver. And beneath it, Aiden Vale fought his hunger, his curse, and the strange, dangerous pull of the boy who had wandered into his life.
Tonight was only the beginning, under the silver moon, hunger met humanity — and Aiden Vale’s fate was sealed.
