What Lurks Beneath the Shadows
The forest hums like it knows a secret. Wind threads through the pines in low breaths, rustling the leaves as they dance. Somewhere up ahead I hear branches snap. Heavy footfalls hit the earth. Something is coming. Something BIG.
Howl. The long distant cry of a predator interrupts my thoughts. Creatures flee and hide as the sound is brought forward by the wind. I pause. Something in me is screaming that I should turn back. But I don’t. I keep walking, drawn in by the heat of the air. The intense scent of rain on bark and tree foliage pulling me further into the woods.
The sounds of the forest go still. The hush that follows feels... unnatural—like the woods are holding their breath, waiting for something to give them release. I take a step forward. Suddenly I find myself standing in a clearing. I freeze. The breath I’d been holding slips out (gasp), sharp and loud against the silence. The source of those heavy footfalls... not the wolf I had imagined. A man. One whose eyes dance like fire in the night. I inhale sharply as he turns, gripping me with his gaze. His stare is intense. Like—
“You.” My breath catches as I gulp from the interruption.
“State your business here.”
“I...” His voice is like velvet steel. I struggle to find the words.
“You can’t be here. Leave.” Not a request. A demand. His tone leaves no room for interpretation.
His eyes are burning my skin alive. He turns away and starts to leave. My mind finally catches up to me.
“I... This forest isn’t owned by anyone! Why can’t I be here?!”
He stops. For a second, my heartbeat jumps into my throat. Internally, I cringe. Contrary to the defiance clearly written on my face, inside I’m itching to flee.
“You have quite the nerve—speaking to me this way.”
My knees quake, but I refuse to be silenced by a man who doesn’t even belong here. I’ve grown up in this forest since I was young. There’s no way he has any claim to this land that I don’t know about. I glare at him defiantly. “So?! You haven’t answered my question yet! Am I not allowed to be here just because you say so?! What right do you have to decide that?!”
Grrr... A low, menacing growl leaves his throat. I’m afraid—in a way I’ve never known before.
“Hmm.” He takes a measured step towards me. “Have you ever known the fear of being hunted by a creature far superior to you?”
The thought flickers through me, wild and unbidden. Every instinct screams that I am prey.
“I can see it in your eyes, little one. You’re afraid. As well you should be.”
Gulp. I try to stand my ground, but my body betrays me. Unconsciously, I take a step back, searching for something firm to brace against. I blink. The next few seconds happen before I can register what’s going on.
His hands... I don’t even see them move. One second, I’m drowning in the burn of his stare, swallowed completely by it. The next, my back slams against wet bark, his arms braced on either side of me, caging me in. His scent lands hard—wild and sharp, each breath radiating heat off of his body. I shudder in fear, and...
The low rumbling in his chest vibrates against me.
“Mmm...” He inhales the scent off my neck. A low, satisfied smile traces the lips of his cold, hard face. Those lips...
“I think...” His voice a melodic drawl, “You’ve just piqued my interest, little one. Would you like me to show you... exactly what right... I have to command you?”
Wet. The heat beneath my skin is radiant now, and he knows it. A smirk.
“Seems like you already know the reason.”
He steps back. “Leave. Before I show you what true submission is.”
Paralyzed. I should leave. Run and never come back to this clearing. But despite my fear, something else is keeping me here. Something primal. Intrigue. And desire. My pulse quickens, hammering inside my chest. I want to reach for him as he slowly steps away, every instinct raging against my better judgment to flee.
I take a step forward, my mind unable to stop me. It’s small—barely a shift in the mud beneath my feet—but it seems deafening in the silence. The corner of his mouth curves, his amusement echoing.
“You seem unwilling to leave, little one. Can I take this to mean, you want to know what it’s like to be hunted... and claimed?” His last words hit me like a sledgehammer.
“I...” I swallow hard, unable to rationalize the way my mind and heart are competing. Nothing about this man seems gentle. His entire being screams predator —eyes marking me like prey, the intensity trapping me in his gaze. And yet, despite the obvious threat to my safety, I want this man. Nothing will stop me from being claimed, from being dominated by such a ferocious creature. The quiet hum of my body as it thrums in anticipation is unlike anything I’ve ever known. Fear—not of being controlled, but of being rejected.
How can this man have such an effect on me? Is this even the kind of thing a sane person does? Proposition a man she just met—in the damn woods?! But what do I care? All that matters to me now is that I—
“You seem to be wavering. Return if you’re unsure what you want. I don’t have time for games.”
Ice. A chill spreads through my body at the harshness of his tone, his words cutting like a knife. Don’t know what I want? Is he insane?! Clearly I’m not so inexperienced that I wouldn’t be aware of what I was proposing! Is... that how he sees me? A child who doesn’t know what she’s saying?! I’ve lived at least as long as he has!
“I—”
He cuts me off. Cool, clean, crisp.
“Perhaps I wasn’t making myself clear. You need to leave. I won’t ask again.”
When the hell did he ever ask?! Is he sane?! He’s nuts!
Furious, I huff in heavy breaths. “You... IDIOT!” I scream. Never mind fear—now I’m just angry. “How can you treat me like this?! Acting as if I’m nothing more than an inexperienced child?! I’m at least as old as you are! I’ve had other offers before, you know! I just... never liked them...” My voice trails off. For the first time since we met, I can gauge a visible reaction. He stills—not in the calm way he had before. This was... deliberate, yet desperate at the same time.
Fear. Alarm bells go off inside my head. He’s... steadily walking toward me. Every pace— a cold, calculated breath. I swallow as the shift in his eyes becomes more dominant. Primal. Predatory.
“What... What are you doing?” I step back again, my body trembling in fear. I reach back, desperate to grab anything I can use to defend myself. “I–I... I’m warning you! I’ve known proper self-defense since I was eight! I’m already considered a skilled master!” Stumble. I trip over an exposed root as I tremble backward. My palms hit the ground as I catch myself from falling, breath heaving.
My heart pounds so loud that I know he can hear it. A mocking sound escapes his lips. His steps, unhurried. The sound of them slicing through the night like a blade cutting silk. He’s enjoying this.
Before I can scramble to my feet, his shadow falls over me. His hand extends, closing around my neck with unshakable finality.
“I warned you, little one. Now... you’re mine.”
I shiver as he hoists me over his shoulder and carries me off into the night.
The forest comes alive again, its sounds swelling—as if a monster hadn’t just stormed by and taken a prisoner. Echoing amongst the trees and the creatures stirring, all that remained of me, where my screams.
